A school bus driver on Long Island has been fired after district leaders said the operator was drinking behind the wheel while kids were on board.
The bus driver had picked up students Wednesday from Smithtown High School West after dismissal when he was allegedly spotted with booze. An open alcoholic beverage was seen in the driver's cupholder.
"Once aware, the district intervened immediately and bus company staff met the bus and driver at Great Hollow Middle School prior to dismissal," Superintendent Mark Secaur said in a district email.
The driver, not publicly identified, was immediately pulled from the bus and replaced by another operator.
The bus company put out the following statement: "The safety of our student riders remains our number one priority and this is completely unacceptable. The driver has been terminated and we are cooperating with law enforcement."
Police were notified, but not in time to see the driver with the drink on the bus. No arrests have been made, but police officials said they are investigating.
"We will cooperate fully with the bus company and the precinct as they conduct their investigation. I can confirm, regardless of the outcome of the investigation, that the driver will no longer transport any Smithtown student," Secaur added.
It was just a Long Island ice tea.

I don’t blame the driver.
What a selfish man. He should have shared his booze with the kids.

My eighth grade algebra teacher kept a pint in the bottom drawer of his desk. All knew and no one cared. He was a good teacher but did sweat a lot. A few would borrow a nip on occation.
I was a schoolbus driver. I used to smoke cigars between schools. I’d lay it on the drivers window ledge when the kids were on board.

Considering the behavior of the little “darlings” these days, I’d probably drink as well if I were a bus driver.
Well...it was five o’clock somewhere.
I had a teacher in HS in NYC (one of the “special high schools, at that) who had a vodka bottle in her desk drawer and used to swig away between classes. Kids could get extra credit for doing things like being messengers from the main office to the classrooms, and I remember coming in as she was hastily stuffing the vodka bottle into the desk drawer.
Prayers for her. She was an unhappy woman, but a good teacher. The vodka didn’t seem to interfere with her knowledge of Shakespeare.
On the other hand, she wasn’t a driver, so she wasn’t risking our lives...this driver needs to be canned.
It would still be an “open container” violation I think, just not a DUI/DWI maybe.
Sometimes it’s the only way to cope for bus drivers; blame the students.
