A US Navy anti-aircraft system was spotted training its sights on a passenger plane in the sky as sailors laughed and pleaded for the machine to change its seeming course.

The military MK 15 Phalanx Close-In Weapon System tracked the aircraft with its powerful six-barrel 20mm cannon as crew members shouted 'no, no, no' as if it was a misbehaving dog.

It followed the passenger plane, believed to be a Boeing 737, for a few seconds before it powered down and lowered its weapon to the relief of the sailors.

A video of the shocking moment was shared on the social media platform X in May and has so far been viewed almost 3million times.

The MK 15 Phalanx is a powerful weapon that is designed to defend military ships automatically against incoming threats such as aircrafts, missiles and small boats and can fire up to 4,500 rounds per minute.

Oh damn! Did they have that tech back then? Pierre Salenger said it was friendly fire.

Yes, they had the tech back then, but at the altitude TWA 8 00 exploded was much higher than the effective range of the CIWS.

The most logical explanation (translation: the one I tend to believe) is that someone from a civilian boat launched a MANPADS missile at the 747.

We were passing out MANPADS missiles to the Afghan rebels during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, so there were quite a few of them on the black market at the time.

The issue is not a type of weapon, the issue is an automated weapons system operating without human control and making autonomous decisions.

The Gunners Mates on my ship called it the CIWS...

Christ
It
Won’t
Shoot

It was pretty awesome when it did, though. Giant, thunderous glowing line of metal death.

What’s the effective range of Phalanx? A commercial jet at cruising altitude is not “Close In”

Wikipedia says maximum range is 3.5 miles.

Effective range is 1 mile.

Debunked as in only the believers in conspiracy theories think it was friendly fire.

Word that.
You DO realize that Skynet self-awareness is less than one generation away from reality?

(tin-hat on /s)

A national defense/national security cover-up is the only logical conclusion after careful analysis of all of the known TWA800 facts, particularly following ‘allegedly’ the 2nd civilian airliner shot down by the US Navy’s AN/SPY system (the first and only official documented case being Iran Air Flight 655).

At the time, the USN was battling to keep their DDG-51 procurement schedule.
https://www.usni.org/magazines/proceedings/1994/july/right-ship

It was also an election year. Such a scandal would have sunk slick willie.

An unarmed SM-2MR missile directed by the still-evolving AN/SPY system was the culprit, imho. It would explain why the supposed missile (e.g., MANPADS with IR seeker) didn’t target one of the engines (i.e., SM2’s semi-active radar homing). A national security concern would also explain why there have been no USN sailors having come forward with details countering the official narrative.

(tin-hat off)

That stated, I can’t dismiss the ‘Iran-revenge’ theory, considering the degree of cover up at the wreckage hanger, though I remain extremely dubious that a MANPADS was responsible for either the witness statements or purported damage to the airframe. But I do believe that missile components were among the recovered wreckage and spirited away by the government.

I actually seen the video. The Daily Mail is completely lying. The photos have been cropped to make it look like the gun was pointed at the plane, it was not.

Not true. The TAO, Tactical Action Officer, has weapons release authority in writing by the CO of a ship. Obviously, the TAO is trained and has the trust and confidence of the Captain. (CVN 71 TAO 88-90)

USS Iowa gunstrikes 23 Sept 1952

My dad was the port 5" gunnery officer on the USS Iowa when it was engaged against Wonsan Harbor, Korea. His gun crew was authorized to return fire when USS Iowa was fired upon. Dad knew there was a major ammo dump just beyond the position that fired on USS Iowa. His crew took out the ammo dump. The fire control computers were all analog. They required skilled operators. Dad's crew was top notch.

TWA 800 was brought down by a dummy load missile strike. That’s why there was no indication of a live missile.
