A restaurant fired back at New York Times columnist David Brooks after he complained Wednesday on social media about the cost of his meal, saying, "This is why Americans think the economy is terrible."
"This meal just cost me $78 at Newark Airport. This is why Americans think the economy is terrible," Brooks wrote with a picture of his dinner, which consisted of a cheeseburger, fries and what appears to be an alcoholic beverage.
However, the restaurant 1911 Smoke House Barbeque pushed back on Brooks' post on Facebook Thursday.
"Looks like someone was knocking back some serious drinks - Bar tab was almost 80% and he's complaining about the cost of his meal," it wrote. "Keep drinking buddy - we get paid off everything."
Brook's post went viral on X, formerly known as Twitter, receiving more than 20 million views in under 24 hours. Many who commented on the post mocked the New York Times columnist.
Co-host of "Breaking Points" Saagar Enjeti said, "Brooks inadvertently proving an important point. If you stop drinking alcohol you can save yourself a lot money!"
Conservative author Carmine Sabia asked, "Alexa, what is an elitist?"
"You voted for Biden. Chow down," conservative actor Nick Searcy wrote.
Author Joyce Carol Oates also mocked Brooks, posting, "(bar bill: $66. food bill: $12. tip: $0 N Y Times expense account)."

“at Newark Airport”
lol - you’ll pay $12 for a ham sandwich at an airport. Good luck getting a descent burger, fries, and a beer for under $25. Add a few more $12 drinks, plus tax...sure $70+.
Moral of the story, try not to buy food & drinks at the airport. If you must, by a sandwich and stay away from alcohol.
I haven’t had a Subway since they hired Megan Rapinwhore as a spokesfreak. Jersey Mike’s is better anyway.
These clowns dont think theyll be challenged. This was great.
“Keep drinking buddy”😂😂😂
Places like the 99 chain in New England can charge something like $13-18 or so for burger and fries (Vermont Cheddar Burger, Bacon cheeseburger etc). Halfway decent. Big Mac or Whopper at fast food places a bit cheaper (but you can’t buy a beer...)
Booze can add a bit to a bill...spent close to $40 at Hofbrauhaus in Pittsburgh for a reuben, litre of beer and apple strudel—and in retrospect the beer was only halfway decent. They used to have a lunch buffet there—no more?
A few years ago after Covid restrictions were relaxed,
I took the City Brew Tour of Pittsburgh—5 hours of “you drink, we drive”. We went to four different craft beer places and had a flight at each (samples of different beers, adding up to 16 oz each) but also included with a great meal at Penn Brewery (a place I already knew and loved). Pretty good.
Later on that day I joined a friend of mine who lived in Westmoreland County and we enjoyed TGIFridays.
Explaining all my brewskis earlier, I ordered...a Coke.
Well said.
My thoughts exactly!
Haven’t flown to Pittsburgh the past couple years, choosing to drive all the way in my own car, but back then, I found Penn Brewery had a location at PIT right across from the Southwest gate. Enjoyed sandwich, beer there—not too bad price wise.
Another time I flew from NH to Pittsburgh but the plane stopped at Philly and I had a brief layover—enough time to eat a cheesesteak (of course) at a bar & grille in the airport. Also half decent price wise. (The big story on TV was Ben Roethlisburger being injured in a cycle crash or something)
That’s right.
Hmmm.... not much option, then, is there?
I thought he quit drinking? Seriously, didn’t he write a book about healthy living through spirituality or some 12 step stuff?
I found two cringeworthy books of his:

https://www.amazon.com/Second-Mountain-David-Brooks/dp/0812993268
Somehow I don’t think he recommended drinking heavily at airports.
Lol.
“cheeseburger, fries for $12”
Damn cheap these days. Hard to find that anywhere under $15 and often $20.
You should not drink and tweet.
