The family of a six-year-old girl who was arrested, bound with zipties and perp walked for causing a tantrum at school is suing a Florida police department.
Kaia Rolle, who was a first grader at Lucious and Emma Nixon Academy Charter School, begged the officer not to use handcuff to restrain her before putting her in a patrol SUV and driving her away in 2019.
The ordeal went viral at the time - and shocked the nation, causing widespread outrage at the Orlando Police Department and the officers involved.
The new lawsuit, filed against the city of Orlando and several police officers, is now seeking $50,000 compensation for the child's suffering after the 'terrorizing, cruel, and senseless' arrest, as well as her medical expenses.
Her grandmother previously said that the police 'ruined' the child's life when they escorted her out of school, arrested her, and charged her with a misdemeanor battery.
The suit, filed on September 18, alleges that officers Dennis Turner and Sergio Ramos, 'had no probable cause' and 'used excessive force' during the detention.
The officers handcuffed the child with zipties and took her out of the building, before fingerprinting her at a detention center and taking her mugshot.
She was 'having a tantrum' due to her pediatric obstructive sleep apnea, which was a disorder that her school was already aware of. She was trying to keep her glasses on, but her teacher wanted her to remove them.
According to the suit, the arresting officers spoke to her grandmother Meralyn Kirkland who pleaded with them to not arrest the child. But they did not listen.
The new lawsuit claims that the child had her DNA taken at the juvenile detention center, and had to step on a step stool to take her mugshot.

Retired teacher. The behaviors are absolutely out of control now. Expelling a child is almost impossible. The child knows, from a very young age, that they can act any way they want when they have a “disability.” These children often rule the roost.
And yes, they are getting a fat settlement.
Seriously? Fyi any respectable adult would have paddled her ass. and she would be banned from school, cps should have been called. its the kid, not the cops acting like shes possessed
An 80 or 90 pound 6 year old with mental problems is a danger to every one.
These children would have been weeded out to special schools in past
When I was in grade school, I would have expected to get my ass beat by the principal or the teacher. Then When I got home, I would have a got another ass beating for getting an ass beating at school!
Your sister is a fool. Educated fool but a fool.
Socialization requires self control .letting them beat her up isn’t loving. Cruel.
Have the parents showed up yet, crying crocodile tears, to collect their $$$?
In Jr. High the Dean of Boys was named Mr. Boydston, and if you got in trouble you were sent to his office. We used to say it was Boydston bust busting time!
50 years ago that would probably have been what happened. Today, definitely no deserved paddling.
As I walk through BJ’s or Sam’s here in central Florida, you can always predict the skin color when you hear (or see) kids acting wild, and their parents are standing right there by them.
What? The average weight of a 6 year old girl is 44.0 lb. Dont exaggerate to make a point.
Bad look for the school AND the parents. Pathetic.
I’ve never heard of such a room. All the schools I went to had a paddle for behavioral adjustments. One of the paddles was said to have holes in it for maximum impact.
What lesson exactly? We will just agree to disagree, based on what I am reading here. This girl clearly has problems, and I would not be surprised if the parent contributes to it, but at the time she was the size of a small to medium sized pet. Cuffing a child is almost always absurd. Seems she needed medical attention.
My 4th grade teacher had a yardstick. A heavy one. She broke it on one kid’s backside (he deserved it).
The cops went to far on this. That said, this kid is going to end up like those gals you see busting up and fighting like animals in a McDonalds.
Mama can make all the excuses she wants, but this kid is heading for real trouble. Tantrums and hitting the teacher because she doesn’t get her way aren’t acceptable. She doesn’t need sunglasses in school.
Mama should have turned this into a chance to let the kid know that this is what happens when you don’t behave. Don’t act like that and it won’t happen. Instead it was turned into a way to line her own pockets.
Am I alone in reading enough of the article to get to this point? WTF is this of the glasses all about?
Spare the rod and spoil the child.
And even if they were 80 or 90 lbs they’d hardly be a threat to an adult unless the adult was a midget or something.
An alternative would be to zip tie her hands and ankles on a heavy chair in the principals’ office. Then leave it up to the principal when to use scissors to free her. If the child is exceptionally noisy, put them in another room for a ‘time out’.
The exception would be when the child has either caused one or more injuries to other children or adults, or if they have gone on a destructive rampage over, say $500 in damages.
