People who had high blood pressure while lying flat on their backs had a higher risk of heart attack, stroke, heart failure or premature death, according to research.
The autonomic nervous system regulates blood pressure in different body positions; however, gravity may cause blood to pool when a person is seated or upright, and the body is sometimes unable to properly regulate blood pressure during lying, seated and standing positions.
To examine body position, blood pressure and heart health risk, the researchers examined health data from the longitudinal Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study.
16% percent of participants who did not have high blood pressure—defined in this study as having top and bottom blood pressure measures greater than or equal to 130/80 mm Hg—while seated had high blood pressure while lying supine (flat on their backs), compared to 74% of those with seated high blood pressure who also had supine high blood pressure.
In comparison to participants who did not have high blood pressure while seated and supine, participants who had high blood pressure while seated and supine had a 1.6 times higher risk of developing coronary heart disease; a 1.83 times higher risk of developing heart failure; a 1.86 times higher risk of stroke; a 1.43 times higher risk of overall premature death; and a 2.18 times higher risk of dying from coronary heart disease
Participants who had high blood pressure while supine but not while seated had similar elevated risks as participants who had high blood pressure while both seated and supine.
"Our findings suggest people with known risk factors for heart disease and stroke may benefit from having their blood pressure checked while lying flat on their backs," Giao said.
"Efforts to manage blood pressure during daily life may help lower blood pressure while sleeping."

Frozen foods are the WORST for sodium. It’s loaded with the stuff. Be very careful mowing your lawn on hot days. That can raise your bp tremendously and while sweating out sodium isn’t a bad idea remember that your also sweating out other nutrients and minerals.
Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate.
Coconut water great for hydration along with your water.
You're under whats called ‘’twilight sedation’’ meaning you're fully conscious but numb in the area where the procedure is being done. Mine was inserted through the forearm. Had a long recoup time though. A month but then I also have a pacemaker so I had to sit it out for a while.
Thank you for sharing that!! I really appreciate it. It’s very likely that’s exactly what I’ll be doing (best guess) for a perforation. I just don’t get know the degree. Glad you’re crushing it! Sounds like you’ve been through enough already!
Oh yes my mowing in Florida summers ends before 10 am or begins after 7 pm. Even then I sweat like a trooper. The Ryobi battery powered mower is lighter and much quieter than my old gas powered mowers. I will never go back.
I second that motion. Also good are watermelons.
Thank you for you kind and well wishes. Hey we all have our ups and downs, right? I just thank God I’m on two feet and breathing.
Hope all is well in your world.
God bless you. Keep on keeping on. I thank the Good Lord I’m still on two feet and breathing at 67.(with a pacemaker and a cardiac stent.)
It's gone up as high as 170/94 many times.
I have an anxiety condition(something that seemed to come out of no where in the last few years) and sometimes have to take Xanax for it. I've found in a situation that when my bp has spiked way up a 0.5mg Xanax will bring those numbers down to around 130/68)or 70) in about twenty minutes. I wouldn't recommend this as a regimen because of the possibility of dependence but just as a suggestion perhaps you might ask your doctor about it.
Thanks for your suggestion. I’ll try it.
