Research provides insight into a critical issue facing surgical patients: post-operative cognitive dysfunction (POCD).
POCD is a neurological complication that some patients experience after undergoing surgical procedures that require anesthesia.
Anesthesia is not without risks.
Sevoflurane, a widely-used anesthetic, has been identified as a significant factor contributing to postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD).
While generally considered safe and effective, sevoflurane has been linked to certain neurocognitive deficits, including POCD.
Resveratrol (RES) is a bioactive compound found in certain foods like grapes.
RES is a known agonist for Silent Information Regulator 1 (SIRT1), a protein that has various neuroprotective roles.
By binding to and activating SIRT1, RES can have a protective effect on the brain. For example, it aids in regulating the growth and differentiation of neurons, can prevent cell death. Moreover, RES has demonstrated its capability to modulate pathways like the cAMP/AMPK/SIRT1, which is particularly relevant in providing neuroprotective effects in stroke scenarios. It can also regulate inflammation, offering potential benefits for aging and age-related diseases.
The study aimed to assess whether resveratrol could mitigate brain damage induced by SEV, a common anesthetic and explored how administering RES before and after surgery could potentially mitigate cognitive impairment in adult rats exposed to SEV.
76 rats were tested and all survived. Three doses of resveratrol were given, and the medium dose worked the best. After being exposed to sevoflurane (SEV), the rats had problems with orientation and weight loss, but resveratrol helped them recover.
Tests also showed that resveratrol improved the rats' balance, motor skills, learning, and memory. At the molecular level, resveratrol acted like a "first-aid kit," reversing changes.
Resveratrol effectively prevented these issues, particularly when administered preemptively before SEV exposure. This implies that employing resveratrol as a preventive measure could prove advantageous for individuals susceptible to postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD).

I take resveratrol every day to keep my heart healthy. It’s also in wine, but wine raises your blood pressure. Life is unfair.
This was such a concern to me that I immediately tested my brain as soon as I woke up.
The TIVA protocol was used on me so I may have been less at risk. They used the Michael Jackson drug.
I gargled with something..can’t remember what but might have been licorice ..right before surgery to help with side effects.

The benefits of reversatrol were refuted a few years ago. In fact, it has a few negatives. This study is specific to anesthesia based issues

That's for sure. General anesthesia has been described as "killing you just enough", and there's an old medical saying that you don't pay the anesthesiologist to put you to sleep, you pay him to wake you back up.
I still don't want to undergo surgery without anesthesia, though.
The post surgery effects of general anesthesia are grossly underestimated. My oncologist acquaintance says he would not ride in a car, get surgery from or even have his taxes done by a person who had major surgery under a general anesthetic in the past month.
I can believe it. I had an operation about six years ago and didn’t feel 100% mentally for at least a few weeks, though I returned to light-duty work after two weeks.
My oncologist buddy says it hasn’t been studied much because no one wants to know the answer for liability reasons and there is no good way around general anesthesia. I think there are some studies but not much.
Fruits are not concentrated sources of resveratrol. Perhaps the best fruit source are grape seeds, in which, as I recall, no more than 25% of the seed is resveratrol.
You’d need to chew the seeds.
Many questions WRT to the refutational studies as well. Dosage, timing, oxidized/non-oxidized state of the resv. used, co-factors, the agenda of those conducting the studies, etc. Similar in many ways to questions about the studies refuting the benefits of Vitamin D.
PS Unlike the Vitamin D studies, one of the criticisms of the resveratrol studies was the use of too high a dose.
