Rolling Stone co-founder Jann Wenner removed from Rock Hall leadership after controversial comments

NEW YORK (AP) — Jann Wenner, who co-founded Rolling Stone magazine and also was a co-founder of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, has been removed from the hall’s board of directors after making comments that were seen as disparaging toward Black and female musicians.

“Jann Wenner has been removed from the Board of Directors of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation,” the hall said Saturday, a day after Wenner’s comments were published in a New York Times interview.

Wenner created a firestorm doing publicity for his new book “The Masters,” which features interviews with musicians Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia, Mick Jagger, John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Pete Townshend and U2’s Bono — all white and male.

Asked why he didn’t interview women or Black musicians, Wenner responded: “It’s not that they’re inarticulate, although, go have a deep conversation with Grace Slick or Janis Joplin. Please, be my guest. You know, Joni (Mitchell) was not a philosopher of rock ’n’ roll. She didn’t, in my mind, meet that test,” he told the Times.

“Of Black artists — you know, Stevie Wonder, genius, right? I suppose when you use a word as broad as ‘masters,’ the fault is using that word. Maybe Marvin Gaye, or Curtis Mayfield? I mean, they just didn’t articulate at that level,” Wenner said.

In the interview, Wenner seemed to acknowledge he would face a backlash. “Just for public relations sake, maybe I should have gone and found one Black and one woman artist to include here that didn’t measure up to that same historical standard, just to avert this kind of criticism.”

If you ask, “How can liberals be like that?” Well, they’re ALL like that. They have been, are now, and always will be the enemy. Treat them like it. In any way needed.

Not even close to trying to be funny.

It is pretty hard to learn about the past when the people who lived it are kept from telling you about it.

Who needs human input when the central bureau can produce all the approved scripts of the past that you will accept?

Given the generally atrocious omissions year after year from the Rock Hall inductees, this seems like a case of getting Capone for tax evasion.

I imagine that interviewing someone like Neil Young would be like talking to a spoiled eight year old

That is an apt description of Neil Young.

I have no problems with female musicians except for the one who plays the ukelele on TV while singing about cranking out a duece that feels like a pineapple grenade.

Not a bad list actually but I would have included David Bowie, Tom Petty, and Elton John as well, as they were also making relevant rock albums over decades and could also be considered masters. Also "articulate" enough to meet the exacting standards of Jann Wenner.

Can't think of any women rock artists with that kind of longevity, maybe Stevie Nicks but she's a bit of an airhead in interviews. I don't think there are any black rock artists that even come close. Maybe James Brown but he's more soul/R&B than rock. As for Jimi Hendrix, he was only around for a few years before his untimely death. Neither of them did great interviews that I'm aware of.

Jann Wenner canceled by the Left - I take a little schadenfreude in that.

This is totally hilarious.
Wenner is a homosexual according to various articles I have seen.
So he is being sacrificed to the intersectionality gods?
Babylon Bee needs to up the quality of their material to stay ahead of the curve.

Ok, there’s a couple on that list that I think are pretty serious thinking guys. Dylan. Maybe Bono, maybe not. Townsend, maybe. Garcia might be interesting.

Lennon, no. Commie. Imagine no possessions. Not a deep thinker. I liked Harrison better.

I think that there are a few others that would be pretty significant thinkers in the world of Rock. Bowie, as you mentioned. Roger Waters comes to mind. Don’t overlook Eric Clapton.

I have never liked Jann Wenner, or his taste of music. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is idiotic, and it's criteria makes no sense.

He also is colossally stupid. Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield are way more articulate than bands Wenner like, like Led Zeppelin, and they didn't even have to steal all their songs.

Go listen to some Curtis Mayfield. He's a genius, and he makes Led Zeppelin sound like a bunch of incoherent, uneducated, adolescents.

Of course Wenner probably didn't like that Mayfield wrote Christian songs, like People Get Ready, or made references to the Book of Relevations in his songs.
