Adults Can Now Get the RSV Vaccine. Here’s Who Should Get the Shot and When

Respiratory syncytial virus, usually shortened to RSV, is a common respiratory virus that can cause mild, cold-like symptoms. While most people recover within a couple weeks, the illness can be severe for infants and older adults, sometimes requiring hospitalization.

Earlier this year, the CDC approved an RSV vaccine for adults, adding another shot to combat the “tripledemic” we were in last winter between COVID, the flu and RSV.

Unlike COVID and the flu, medical professionals are not encouraging everyone to get vaccinated against RSV. In fact, only a handful of the population should get this vaccine.

Here’s what to know about who should get the vaccine and when.

WHO SHOULD GET AN RSV VACCINE?

Only a small portion of the population should get an RSV vaccine.

• This includes people who are 60 and older who have compromised immune systems and/or heart problems who would be deeply impacted by a flu-like virus, said UNC Health’s Dr. David Wohl.

“My 2 brothers got the first shingles shot (2-shot series). They did not go back for shot #2 because the first one was so rough (ill after the shot). “Dr. McCullough said the shingles shot was the worst he’s ever gotten.”

In the second week in Nov., before covid, my wife and I decided to get the two shingles shots at that time. The Rn knew that my wife was an Rn, and she advised us/her that only one of us get the shot as reactions were often severe.
My wife said no thank you and refused any shingles shots.

My reactions from only one shingles shot, were very severe including cardiac symptoms, and I ended up getting a cardiac stent and a new CPAP machine and on blood thinners.

An older friend with serious health problems ended up getting 3 stents after his single shingles shot.

Now flash forward to when this friend, and I got the Pfizer shots in the following Jan. Our wives only had sore arms.

He and I had some mild fever and aches and pains. Then on about the 3/4 day post Covid vaccination, we got the classic shingles red spotting on our stomachs. Then, the red spots disappeared on both of us. Our wives never had a problem, and both Covid and are in their early 80’s. Our two different doctors felt that our shingle shots for some reason went into bad side effect action and then worked.

So, my wife said, “No think you re the shingles shots!. However, she may opt for the current one shot.”

We have known 2 people like Senator DiFi, who had shingles which ravaged their bodies and drove them into hospice.
