Yup... That’s what I did at a wedding party a while ago where I wanted to record all the speeches. Good quality microphone (Blue Yeti) and my laptop.

If camera, get three or four, and set them up at different angles and distances to be able to cut from one to the other, to make it more focusing on the brain.

If you have just one angle and shoot the video straight through, it begins to feel like the subject is droning on. Changes in perspective and distance and focal range make things feel newer and more interesting, and maintain the viewer’s focus.

First off, the digital recorder, as long as it is competent, isn’t the issue. The Microphones are the most important factor in getting good sound. If the sound your phone records is sufficient, then you are done. If however you want professional quality sound, a pair of Sennheiser mics are the ticket. Mono at 64 kbit if mp3. Wave files at 44.1 kHz in mono are best for uncompressed.

Find sound absorbing wall material, to keep any echo down. A dead sound booth or room is best. Directional mike cuts down on the sound pickup except in the direction you talk from.

Sennheiser has the classic MD421U I think. It’s a 1970s design.

In PA applications the Shure SM58 classic mike.
