Fisherman finds rare two-million-to-one blue lobster in Plymouth Sound
Plymouth Herald ^ | 9 SEP 2023 | Katie Timms

Mallory Haas, 38, from The Ships Project said she was "surprised" to see the creature - which she had never seen before in the wild.

Mallory, originally from Ohio, US, said: "I'd never seen a lobster underwater that blue. I've seen some in a tank with bits of blue on them, that is quite common, but totally blue is very rare.

"I've seen one in a tank before that was very white, like a ghost, but this one was almost aqua blue - all down her legs. The fisherman who gave her to us said he had decided to release it because of how rare it was, and wanted us to return it to the water.

"It was such a surprise, but she was lovely. We think she must be about 50 years old - you can tell from the size of her claws and body. I'm not sure what causes the blue colour, but I think it can potentially be triggered by environmental factors.

"The blue comes from a B protein that can be released into a lobster's body due to a genetic defect which can be caused by environmental factors, so while it's more likely that if she has babies they will be blue, they might not be.

"We've seen loads of lobsters this year, they all love to hide in cracks and holes on the sea bed in the Sound. I've heard there are more than usual this year, but she has clearly been here some time."

There is a law on the books that prisoners could only be fed lobster three times a week. That was back before transportation of live lobsters became practical.

Maine lobstermen have caught a few of these super rare one-in-two million lobsters in the last few years...

Being from West Texas, I have no idea what a lobster is other than what I see at HEB or Walmart. Are they more tasty than Mexican food?

Turns out it’s a normal lobster and was just holding its breath.

Hard to believe anybody would be so inconsiderate as to post a story like that without a photo.

No problem. Hopefully that is what we are all at FR for, to expand our knowledge, so that we become better informed people. No one knows it all, and especially when it comes to facts such as why some lobsters are blue. So, I'm good at the mundane, while others here fill in my lacking's which are too numerous to list. πŸ™‚

Thanks for the note of appreciation though. πŸ‘

Self-explanatory: Duckduckgo Search: Why do shrimp turn orange when cooked?

Lots of results but this one covers it pretty well. It was the first result which was convenient ;-)

Why do shrimp turn orange when cooked?

Now I know two new things - Probably should take a nap.

That's one of those knowledge things most will forget, because of the name astaxanthin, unless one is really determined to remember it. As-tax-an-thin might help, but I am still likely to say As-thin-as-tax due to my dyslexia, even though that makes no sense. 🀣

Tell me after your nap, if you can still repeat what you have learned without looking it up again. I know I can't. As far as blue lobsters goes, about all I can remember is that only about 1 in 2 million will exist. 🀣

But as long as there is an internet & search engines, I can still look it up. I wasn't blessed with a photographic memory, and I refuse to get a chip implant to increase my memory capacity. 🀣

Something to keep you up late at night...

Even if you have eidetic memory if you google it or any search engine, skipping the library, you’re only getting what their AI system wants to feed you.

What you’re looking for may be there but its 12,000+ results below and you’ll never see it.

That’s what we rely on these days. AI generated results that gives us the information they want us to see, not what we want to know. IMHO.

Sleep tight. ;-)

That’s a point too, but that rarely extends into this kind of information. But the bottom line is, if they feed me BS about these kinds of topics the consequences are minimal. πŸ˜‹

You're right in that regard - if its not a controversial subject, one generally gets good information. However, if there's anything touching a political issue from whoever, Climate Change, Deep State. Uniparty, Freedom, Our Constitution, etc., etc., etc.? Fergetabout it.

Its wise to skip taking the controversial info with a "pinch of salt" and just keep a horse's salt lick by your desk for emergencies. ;-)
