THE WAR WEST OF THE MISSISSIPPI: Official Reports of Gen. Steele’s Movements; THE DEFEAT OF MARMADUKE’S FORCES (9/6/1863)

ST. LOUIS, Thursday, Sept. 3.

A letter from Gen. STEELE, received at Headquarters Tuesday night, dated Clarendon, Aug. 26, says:

"Our advance, under DAVIDSON, has driven MARMADUKE'S cavalry, about 3,000, out of Brownsville, capturing Col. BURBRIDGE and some privates.

At the date of the dispatch from DAVIDSON, GLOVER'S brigade was pushing the enemy toward Bayou Metor."

This morning the following dispatch was received from Geo. FISK:

PILOT KNOB, Wednesday, Sept. 2.

To Major-Gen. Schofield:

A deserter from BURBRIDGE'S command reports that our forces attacked PRICE on the 25th at Brownsville and Bayou Meter. "Old Pap's" forces were driven back across Arkansas River on Wednesday forenoon last.

The entire rebel force was in full retreat, STILLS and DAVIDSON hotly pursuing them, and shelling the fleeing rebels.

Hundreds are deserting.

MARMADUKE'S command was wholly routed and scattered.

Little Rock was within the grasp of the Federal army.

The people of Arkansas, north of White River, are praising God for the prospective deliverance from the Jeff Davis despotism.

C.B. FISK, Brigadier-General.

Correspondence of the Chicago Times.

CLARENDON, Ark., Thursday, Aug. 26, 1863.

The Confederates are fortifying at Bayou Metor, about fifteen miles this side of Little Rock. The point is one of many advantages, and, if well fortified and desperately defended, will prove a hard place to take. The bayou is upon the extreme western limit of the "Grand Prairie," which stretches from the White to the Arkansas River. It is some fifty feet wide, has abrupt banks and a treacherous and miry bed. The rebel position is said to be flanked by swamps, which will prevent its being Turned, and compel Gen. STEELE to attack in front, where they have from twenty to thirty nieces of artillery ready to place in position upon the completion of their works.
