This is still cool, but after 57 flights I wonder how much ‘science’ is still being collected by this? Seems like whatever they were trying to verify or test has already been accomplished.

I assume that it will find the same thing that the other 56 flights found... Dirt... Lots and lots of dirt, with the occasional rock here and there.

The moon and mars... Interesting thing about the both of them? Absolutely nothing!

The helicopter was proof of concept that flight was possible. Now it is trailblazing, checking out what is up ahead, perhaps assisting with the best route. The science that comes from the rover could be improved with the help of the helicopter.

As with many other planetary probes, the helicopter is performing well beyond expectations. The Mars rover Opportunity was supposed last 90 days. It lasted over 14 years.

They got it to fly, and it kept working. They do put it to good use as a scout for the rover.

The capacities are limited though because it was sent as a proof-of-concept for flying in Mars’ non-atmosphere.

There are those who think it’s all a con ala the Moon landings. Doesn’t bother me. I’d just chuckle because... “Ingenuity”. And Perseverance. The real world is full of useful analogies!

As for the Moon... I’m pretty sure the crew from Apollo XVII can confirm the same observations noted by the crews from Apollo XI, X11, XIV, XV and XVI. Awesome scenery and a whole lot of nothing... Other than dirt, dust and rocks.

If we do survive long enough to land missions on Mars... I’m pretty sure the observations will be strikingly similar to those of the Moon missions.
