There are still 385 people on the official list of those missing after the Maui wildfire 27 days after the blaze tore through the seaside town of Lahaina, killing at least 115 people.
The FBI and the Maui Police Department announced Friday that 245 of the people on the list of 388 missing individuals from the previous week were located and removed from the list. But, a nearly equal number of new names were added.
The new figure was an unfortunate amendment to what Hawaiian Governor Josh Green said he had expected just one day earlier, which was that the number of missing people would fall below 100.
'We think the number has dropped down into the double digits, so thank God,' Green said in a video.
In a statement, he added: 'Exact numbers are going to take time, perhaps a long time, to become finalized.'
After the new update, Green said the number of fatalities following mass casualty events are often in flux until investigations are completed.
He also said that there are less than 50 'active missing person cases,' though he did not go into specifics about that figure.
Authorities believe that at least 115 were killed by the 1,000-degree blaze. The names of 50 of the deceased have been made public, and most of the rest have yet to be identified.
On August 8, flames pushed by 60 mph gusts of wind tore through the 12,000-person town, razing homes and businesses alike and destroying a place with strong ties to Native Hawaiian history.
More than half of the town's residents are now living in hotels and short-term rentals as they figure out what's next as the EPA works to eliminate hazardous waste left in the town's burn zone.
Reconstruction will be a long and expensive process.

The first fire...
They de energized the lines, so the second, deadly fire was not caused by the power lines...
Maybe it’s true.
Most of the so called “MISSING” are not missing in sense of dead Many do not know they are :Missing” - they were reported by family/friends They are probably staying on other parts of islands - tourists left the island for home, some locals probably went to stay on other islands with family/friends
“Police did not block passable roads. “
You’re so full of crap. People who went around those road blocks lived. Those that didn’t, died.
Stopped reading at “FBI”
Why is the FBI involved in this?
Where are the kids?
Great question.
As evil as that agency has become, I can’t assume there’s a righteous reason.
Were you there?
L
They will weaponize bureaucracy and make them too weary to wait around for all the regulatory matters governing cleanup as a prelude to any rebuilding.
They will wait out the property owners & take the town through attrition.
I have a nasty feeling this was all on purpose.
You don’t realize that your comment literally agrees with my assertion. So thank you for saying that the passable roads were not blocked.
The ‘Cleanup Crew” has now arrived on the scene so you can be sure to get nothing but the truth.
Oh so we can only comment on events when we were there? Were you at all the events in which you make comments on this site?
I don’t draw conclusions when I’m not privy to all the facts. I’ve seen firsthand accounts that say the cops did indeed block the roads. I’ll take that over your bloviating any day.
Or are you saying all those people who, unlike you, were there are lying?
L
You certainly seem to be doing that here.
"I’ve seen firsthand accounts that say the cops did indeed block the roads."
And I've seen the police chief say that his officers were blocking downed power lines and streets that were impassable due to fires.
Oh, but let me guess. You think the chief was in on the whole thing! He was part of the diabolical plot by Bill Gates and Oprah to clear out the land and kill hundreds of people so they could own the island. That's literally the theory you are supporting: there was a plot to murder hundreds of people and the police force was part of it. Am I wrong? Do you think this theory is true?
“You think the chief was in on the whole thing!”
No. I think he’s another incompetent diversity hire who is too stupid and arrogant to act in a timely manner.

just guessing, but asking people to come forward voluntarily will not answer all questions and will just delay finding out all of the knowable facts (so let the lawsuits begin).
1) I am very willing to accept incompetence for mistakes made during the response to the fires. Incompetence is very different from the theory MANY are spouting on this site that Hollywood elites intentionally lit these fires to buy up land and the police acted in concert.
2) The Maui Chief is named John Pelletier. He's as white as they come.
In these types of situations, I always go to the simplest answer. The Maui fires were the prefect blend of wind (80mph at some points), drought-like conditions, and of course human error. In the battle between man and nature, nature always wins. I'm just not sure why people choose to believe very complicated answers when the simplest one is able to answer the question.
“2) The Maui Chief is named John Pelletier. He’s as white as they come.”
That doesn’t make him competent. I know plenty of stupid white folks. And he’s a Dem, so that just nails that door shut.
