Well, how close is close? Maybe the limit is set too high, so that the normal practice is crowding it.
That’s my first thought.
Hitting each other?
Plenty-o-FR posts have no shortage of intersectionality....
We should fly in large billiard balls.

So, are they "near misses" or "near collisions"???
We need more diverse air traffic controllers. Diversity is our strength.
As we experience declining demographics and an increasingly dumber pool of people in the population, statistically, it becomes more probable things happen such as planes crashing... ....and nuclear power plant melt downs. Just a matter of time.

When you think about it major airports are designed to have lots of aircraft just miss each other on a systematic basis.
Isn’t this just the kind of thing that AI should excel in, with close monitoring by qualified humans? It’s like a large complicated game of 3-D chess, and AI should have the added advantage of being able to calculate when to avoid getting too close.
Affirmative action at ATC.
These close calls are caused by not enough “diversity” of pilots. Well, that and climate change.
When did it change to, “near miss” from, “near hit”?
Near miss doesn’t even sound right.
(Am I the only one that noticed that around a decade ago? It does sound like something a Brit would say...)
I see Obama’s ATC hiring plan is paying dividends just as predicted.
This is nothing new. Some years ago I was at the airport doing some cleaning and stuff on our aircraft. I saw a 727 arriving on short final. Just over the numbers it went to full power and executed a go around with a sharp turn across mid field. I flipped on the radio and it turns out that the landing 727 had been cleared to land while at the same time another 727 was cleared to take off on the same runway in the opposite direction. Quick thinking and evaluation of the situation by the pilot of the landing aircraft. Controller was out to lunch. Highly competent pilot saved the day.
Wouldn't it have been nice if the New York Times had taken a "deep dive" into the 2020 election fraud instead of ignoring it and saying there's no evidence?
