You board the flight and you think your dream Caribbean vacation has begun, only for the whole thing to quickly turn into a nightmare:
Flight 307 was climbing out of William P. Hobby Airport in Houston en route to Cancun on Tuesday evening when the right engine erupted in flames, KHOU reported. ...
"I think I fly once or twice a month and I knew that wasn't normal and so I opened up my window and I'm sitting next to the engine and that whole engine you see like fireballs coming out of it," said [one passenger], who was headed to the Mexican resort with his girlfriend.
"I'm thinking damn, it's gonna go down," Kalisek said.
Looking out your plane window and seeing this is terrifying enough:
In some ways it's even more alarming to see from the ground.
Thankfully nobody was hurt. The plane "returned to the airport to check out a potential mechanical issue," according to Southwest.
"The aircraft landed safely and was taken out of service," the company said.
That was just the power boost being activated....
A “compressor stall”...not that uncommon....pulling back on the throttle for awhile usually clears it:

We were on a Northwest flight and circling the city waiting for weather below us to clear & we were struck by lightning. You could hear a pin drop. We flew back to Minneapolis because the weather didn’t clear, got on another plane and landed an hour later. Thought we were going to be in Minneapolis for a couple hours waiting for a spare plane, crew etc.
I want to know how one passenger was able to open his window?
Concur. Compressor stall.
He meant the sliding shutter...............
