White Sox legend Minnie Miñoso gets Chicago school named for him after CPS drops Civil War general from title
Chicago Tribune ^ | August 17, 2023 | Armando L. Sanchez

The late Chicago baseball legend Minnie Miñoso was also known as “Mr. White Sox” and the “Cuban Comet.” Now he will be known, too, for a South Side school that newly bears his name.

Minnie Miñoso Academy — the building formerly known as George McClellan Elementary, located just a few blocks west of Sox ballpark Guaranteed Rate Field — was celebrated Thursday with a back-to-school bash ahead of opening day in Chicago Public Schools on Monday. Miñoso’s son, Charlie Rice-Miñoso, and Sox mascot Southpaw were among those on hand to welcome families to the re-christened campus.

The building bearing his name is among three in CPS that are beginning the new school year with new monikers. The others are Daisy Bates Academy of Social Justice, formerly Caldwell Academy of Math & Science, and Monarcas Academy, formerly Enrico Tonti Elementary.

CPS said it worked with families, teachers and students to come up with names that “better reflect the community and its values.”

It’s part of a larger effort to rid Illinois’ largest school district of campuses named after people who were slaveholders or are otherwise considered problematic by modern standards. McClellan, for example, was a politician and a commanding general for the U.S. Army during the Civil War, but while he fought on the Union side, he largely opposed the abolition of slavery.

CPS also recently renamed Daniel Boone Elementary to Mosaic School of Fine Arts. Boone, a pioneer and frontiersman who died in 1820, was long viewed as a folk hero, but his legacy has been reconsidered because he was a slave owner and because of his treatment of Indigenous people. CPS’ equity office determined him to be a “historically egregious figure.”

General George B. McClellan commanded the Army of the Potomac. His victory at the Battle of Antietam provided Abraham Lincoln with the opportunity to release the Emancipation Proclamation. McClellan was the Democrat presidential nominee in 1864. Later, he was the governor of New Jersey.

In his retirement, Minnie Minoso worked as a greeter outside of various Chicago taverns before ball games.

I imagine if McClellan was alive, he really wouldn’t GAS about a school full of empty skulls trying to figure out whether they are boys or girls being named after him. One of the greatest cavalry saddles that saved a lot of Cavalry horses is named after him. Minnie can have the Chicago school.

Daisy Bates Academy of Social Justice, formerly Caldwell Academy of Math & Science

This renaming tells you all you need to know about Chicago's public schools and why things will probably never improve in that city.

Well, to be fair McClellan wasn’t a very good general. Yes, he won the Battle of Antietam. But it was a meat grinder, a bloody mess. And he failed to pursue Lee’s retreating army.

Anyway, here’s what really bothers me: “Daisy Bates Academy of Social Justice, formerly Caldwell Academy of Math & Science…”

Going from a math and science academy to one for social justice.
Those poor kids will be indoctrinated just like the Hitler Youth was.

The former William McKinley High School building, which had been closed for awhile and reopened, has also undergone a “woke” name change to “Best Practices” School. Next it was renamed “Chicago Bulls Academy.”

It is all about erasing historical figures who do not fit the leftist agenda in socialist Chicago. An elementary school named after Louis Aggaziz was renamed for “Harriet Tubman” because the Swiss biologist supported the eugenics movement (so did Margaret Sanger of Planned Parenthood who is a heroine of the political leftists and exempt from criticism).

In all, there are plans to rename thirty Chicago Public School campuses.

The former Caldwell Academy for Math and Science was named for a Chicago physician who was the head of the Chicago Medical Society. Now, it is renamed for one of the students who integrated a public high school in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Is the opium epidemic causing the jackasses living in this country to name every damn thing after 12 percent of the population? The Caucasian drug addicts need to wake up.

Never heard of that “legend” - but, hey, what’s more important an average baseball player or a general who fought a bloody war?

Obviously the baseball player... if he’s black.

At least the Hitler youths were taught to love their country.

I doubt that any of the “educators” at the newly renamed school bothered to read Minnie Minoso’s biography. He expressed vehemently anti-communist and anti-Castro opinions in the book. Minoso invested some of his baseball earnings in Cuban real estate, primarily apartment buildings which were to be managed by one of his siblings. After the revolution, Fidel Castro confiscated the buildings.

By the way, the third listed school to renamed was “Enrico Tonti” elementary. Tonti was a French explorer who helped La Salle survey North America, including the Mississippi River Valley, the Great Lakes, and present day Canada. Tonti’s name has been removed from the school which was renamed (in Spanish) for the Monarch butterfly.

Right, because "social justice" is more important than actually useful life skills like math & science.

Dumbasses. Chicago gets exactly what it deserves, which after my travels over the past 9 days is ridicule and scorn.

You have to commend them for truth in advertising. Graduates of this school may aspire to be Walmart greeters if they do not wish to turn to a career in rap.
