California's doctor-assisted deaths surged 63% to 853 last year: critics say state law is unconstitutional, has made it too easy to get lethal drugs, and 'steers' disabled people to suicide

Record numbers of people ended their lives in California last year in America's biggest doctor-assisted suicide program, after lawmakers made it easier for residents to get their hands on lethal drugs.

Last year, 1,270 people got fatal prescriptions under the state's End of Life Option Act (ELOA), and 853 people used them to end their lives, the California Department of Public Health said in its annual report.

That's a jump from 863 scripts and 522 deaths the previous year.

The data come amid growing concerns that California, Oregon, and other US states are liberalizing their assisted-suicide programs too quickly and following the example of Canada, where some 13,500 people were euthanized last year.

The surge in assisted suicides came after California lawmakers in 2021 backed a law that shortened from 15 days to 48 hours the time needed to apply for a cocktail of suicide drugs. That law took effect in January.

'It's no wonder that the number of assisted suicides soared in the year after the California legislature effectively removed the original 15-day cooling-off period,' Matt Valliere, director of the Patients' Rights Action Fund, told DailyMail.com.

'Most Medi-Cal patients cannot get a mental health consult in less than 72 hours and are not guaranteed palliative care, but now, they can get suicide drugs in 48 hours and the state will pay for it every time.'

Not all people are religious. If a disabled person wants to end his life without violence why should anyone try and stop them. That should be their choice if they want to end their life, whose business is it for anyone to stop them.

But the state shouldn’t be in the business of ‘steering’ them that way if that’s being done.

Anything that’s legal and makes money will be optimized to make money. There will be consultants and special programs that teach doctors how to optimize their income. If someone is depressed, don’t treat the depression if you make more income steering them to suicide. It’s not a moral slippery slope, it’s a moral cliff.

If someone wants to end their life, there are dozens of ways to do it. However, we should not allow the medical profession, whose stated mission is to SAVE lives and restore health, to participate one iota.

If you had to live in California, wouldn’t you make the same choice?

That nothing compared to over a 100k deaths from fentanyl, which is a by product of Democrat policy as well. Simply put, Democrats murder millions each year when you throw in abortions too.

I’m an opponent of assisted suicide from a moral position and unfortunately my state is a proponent of it.

As to the chart, these numbers will remain high as Boomers move on to the other side.
Young Boomers are 59-60 and old Boomers are 78-79, the ‘age math’ says over the next couple of decades many will gone.

We have legalized suicide too, it’s called “Hospice Care”.

I think it’s more akin to euthanasia , or “lets kill Pop for the money.” It also goes by the name of “comfort care.”

I’ve posted this before but it’s worth repeating…All you need is a kool aid-infused physician team spouting “this is how it should end..” and “…this is the merciful thing to do…” and “…she loved a good life…” as they kill your loved one with morphine or something else that makes it look “natural.”

A good friend's father was recently hospitalized with a heart attack and hooked up to machines. The attending doctor didn't think the old man would make it. My friend, respecting Dad's wishes to not be on machines, signed a paper approving the de-machining and putting the Dad on "comfort care" which (IN GENERAL) is basically no curative care.

That was ok - that was the Dad's wishes.

The old man pulled through, but the hospital refused to put Dad back on fluids or nutrition because - you guessed it - "comfort care" IN THAT HOSPITAL and for THAT DOCTOR is effectively Terri Schaivo-style starvation and dehydration.

They said, food and water was a medical treatment and thus "curative" and AGAINST the rules of "comfort care."

My friend was stunned. And the attending and her team wouldn't budge. For the next few days, my friend and siblings heard from scores of nurses etc that withholding fluids was effectively "the right thing to do"....very Terri Schaivo-like. They also threw in “Dad live a good long life” and “he will never come back the way he was.”

It took a virtual miracle whereby a different doctor intervened, said the father clearly wasn't terminal, and put the old man back on nutrition and fluids.

While my friend's Dad passed away peacefully in his sleep a few weeks later, it was on Dad’s terms.

It’s also worth noting that the siblings were split on “comfort care.” There WAS a view that it was ok for Dad to dehydrate to death. Someone even said that dehydration is painless; I heard the total opposite during the Schaivo murder.

Euthanasia is, technically, illegal. And I know many people would be OK if fluids were withheld when it is THEIR time to go. Fair enough.

But euthanasia can be made legal if you're not careful with Fine Print or vetting the "mercy killing" mindset of the attending.

These are people looking for affirmation and approval. They go to a doctor not for help but for approval. He agrees with them and gives them permission via a prescription. Therefore what they want to do is affirmed by “authority.” Therein lies just one of the problems.

Rich Californians has doctor assisted suicide. Really poor and dysfunctional people have fentanyl and the “just poor to middle class” have traditional means of suicide or suicide by cop.

It is truly sad that people feel that they need doctor assisted suicide as an option.

I find it ironic that they can’t certify drugs for death penalty sentences but can find as much drugs needed for assisted suicides.
