NEPTUNE BEACH, Fla. – The winning ticket in Tuesday’s $1.58 billion Mega Millions drawing was sold at a Publix in Neptune Beach.
The prize was the largest in Mega Millions history, and now everyone is just waiting for the winner to come forward.
Prizes must be claimed within 180 days of the drawing, and because the prize is more than $1 million -- much more -- it must be claimed in person at Florida Lottery headquarters in Tallahassee -- even if the person who bought the ticket is from out of state. If the winner wants the single-payment cash option, they must claim it within 60 days of the drawing.
In Florida, Lottery winners cannot remain anonymous, but because of the size of the prize, the winner’s name will be exempt from public disclosure for 90 days, unless the winner waives the exemption.

$1.5 billion, but if they take the cash option they only get about $750 million, hardly worth the effort.

I think I could manage a few million but once you into several hundreds of millions or a billion?
I would be terrified. You are now at the top of every lowlife and criminal genius’s hit list. Everyone in your family is a possible target forever. I feel one would never know a minute’s peace. That kind of wealth would seem like a solid platinum and diamond prison cell.

Publix sells a lot of winning tickets all over the state. I didn’t play this time. But I get mine at Winn Dixie when I do. Perhaps I need to change that.

I’ve never understood the fascination behind where a winning lottery ticket was bought. Especially if the numbers were preselected.
Quick picks as well for that matter.

Well, I didn’t play, so I didn’t win. But I didn’t lose, either. Maybe next time…🙄

It’s just odd that Publix of all places seems to have a lot of winning tickets. The villages publix had two big winners at different times.

Florida does not tax lottery wins. Cash option would be $493 million, after taxes.
