A gun violence prevention advocate has been arrested in a major drug and guns bust after being snared in a two-year investigation dubbed 'Operation in Plain Sight'.
Michael Rodriguez, 49, was arrested in his home in Yonkers, New York on July 26 after cops seized a cache of illegal contraband including over a kilo of cocaine, three pistols and a shotgun.
The activist was also found with $165,000 in cash and $50,000 in jewelry, and is accused of orchestrating a major trafficking ring all while acting as executive director of Bronx Rises Against Gun Violence.
Rodriguez was among 15 people arrested in the major operation, as officials placed him at the top of a criminal organization distributing drugs and guns across Orange County, New York.
Just days before his arrest, Rodriguez praised his organization's work to Bronx News 12 at the group's annual cookout, saying the event was to celebrate 'bringing peace to the community.'
Rodriguez's organization, known as B.R.A.G, specifically worked with at-risk youth's in the Bronx neighborhood of New York City to halt the spread of gun violence in the area.
But just an hour's drive away, he was allegedly orchestrating the spread of guns and crime across the towns of Middletown, Port Jervis and the surrounding areas.
The county's District Attorney David Hoovler condemned the activist as he announced the arrest, saying Rodriguez's alleged double-life was 'unconscionable'.
'The very guy that we have that is supposed to be stopping gun violence in one jurisdiction in New York City, is poisoning our jurisdiction up here,' he told a press conference.
'It is unconscionable that the Director of a respected group which has pledged to reduce gun violence and help at-risk youth would himself choose to become a major drug dealer and commit weapons offenses.'
