I will say this in support of Boston
Cars Debut..... 6 million album sales
Boston..... 17 Million.
What this proves is that FM pop music does matter. But in the end... Quality rules.
I totally agree. Boston, IMHO, can be irritating.
To me, some of the stuff on Boston’s debut sounds derivative of David Coverdale/Glenn Hughes-era Deep Purple, particularly the “Burn” album, and also a bit like Styx.
What would the Cars’ debut sound like, maybe a blend of Roxy Music and Bowie with some Buddy Holly thrown in?
The Cars has one weak song. One. The album is a juggernaut of hard rock/new wave synthesis.
Not really a fan of either, but would probably give the edge to Boston.
Yet neither of them is annoying as Eddie Trunk.
I liked both a lot, but I gotta go with the Cars, too. Side 2 of the vinyl was one of my all-time favorites. (Dig it with headphones!)
Slightly different eras, though not that far apart. I think Boston got rolling with a bunch of other key ‘70s bands by hitting FM radio and the arenas hard. Cars on the other hand just came blasting out of summertime AM radios as punk and power pop hit the scene. Both awesome bands in their own genres.
I grew up outside of Philadelphia. My bands back then were The Who and Van Halen. One of the rock stations, 93.3 WMMR, had a top 93 songs of the 70s countdown. Despite The Cars coming out in 1978, there were many songs from that album in the countdown. Ironically, only two songs from Van Halen’s debut were on the list, and placed pretty poorly vs The Cars.
Song for song, The Cars is a more consistent, solid album though Foreplay/Long Time is bitchin’.
Boston made rock anthems, for sure, but the Cars were making anthems of their own, in their own style. Grew up with them and still love listening to them.
Love both these bands and saw both of them back in the 80’s. Gotta give the nod to one of my top 5 favorites which is Boston. It was tough though because I have so many great memories connected with both of those albums and I love the Cars as well.
The Cars were a very tight live band but were pretty boring to watch. My buddy that I went with (We saw the Candy-O tour) said that he could have pinned a picture of the band to his bulletin board to look at and listened to the two albums back to back and saved the $12.50 and the two hour drive from our little town to Omaha. I always thought that was pretty humorous. I do have to give them props because they put out 4 albums in a row that had nothing but great tunes.
The Cars suck.
Easton was always spot-on. And then there was the surprise of bassist Benjamin Orr’s lead vocal on “Drive,” which became one of their biggest hits — brilliant, but so much different than their usual sound with Ric on the lead. The whole band had talent to spare.
By the way, as a disc jockey at the time, I thought “Drive,” by The Cars, was genius.
This is such a difficult choice for me, personally, I can not make a decision.
I met Pierre at Live Aid at JFK in 1985. I have a picture of us from that day somewhere. He was very cool then; I’m glad he’s still around.
I was at Live Aid in Philadelphia. The Cars played in the afternoon. For some reason, they were extremely loud for Drive. I don’t know if it was the heat, the timing, or the 110db vibe of that tune, but while Drive wasn’t a fav beforehand, for me that live performance is a memorable moment.
It’s a great song, and like I said earlier, such a surprise coming from them. I think it’s very cool when a band departs from their usual stuff and shocks the world :)
Probably the best example of that is Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.” Who knew those crazy boys could do a ballad? Worldwide smash!
