By the arrival at this port, yesterday morning, of the transport Belvidere, Capt. W.H. WINTERS, from Port Royal, S.C., July 29, we have news from Charleston to that date.

The Belvidere had on board the One Hundred and Seventy-fourth regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, numbering 417, noncommissioned officers and privates, whose term of service had expired. She passed off Charleston bar July 29, at 11 o'clock, A.M. Saw two Monitors and the Ironsides engaging Fort Wagner.

Gen. GILLMORE had succeeded in erecting a long line of batteries within 250 yards of Fort Wagner. He had also mounted three heavy siege guns within one mile and a quarter of Fort Sumter, which were to open fire on Sumter the day the Belvidere sailed.

Gen. GILLMORE was confident that when he mounted all his heavy siege guns he would soon reduce Sumter. The casualties among our forces were very few in number.

THE OPERATIONS AT CHARLESTON.

A TRIP UP THE HARBOR ON A FLAG-OF-TRUCE BOAT.

MORRIS ISLAND, Saturday, July 25, 1863.

It having been thought desirable that we should, if possible, have our wounded, taken in the late engagements and in the hands of the rebels, brought within our lines and properly cared for by our own surgeons and nurses, last Wednesday evening Gen. VOEGES, Col. HALL and Dr. CRAVEN went, bearing a flag of truce, and held a conference on the [???] of with Gen. HEYWOOD and other rebel officers. This conference resulted in an agreement for the exchange of wounded, without regard to numbers, and that the men of each party of wounded should give their parole to remain in force until regularly exchanged. The rebels agreed, also, to meet us near Sumter with a flag of truce for this purpose, on Friday morning, at 10 o'clock,

An interesting note that Edward Everett showed up to get his two sons out of the draft.

I guess “fortunate sons” have always been a thing.

Friend wife and I intend to go to Charleston in November to acquaint ourselves with a water purification mission for Africa.

We fully intend to to search out these venues. Revolutionary War stuff, too.

If you take a tour of Ft. Sumter, make sure you take one that actually lets you land on Ft. Sumter and walk around. Many tours just circle the Fort and never land.

Downtown Charleston is a pretty big area, the Historic District or French Quarter are within walking distance of Battery Park, Rainbow Row, etc. and are what a lot of people think of as ‘downtown’.

Great place to visit, great food, but your debit cards and credit cards are going to get a workout. And take some warm clothing, it’s been fairly chilly by late Oct. when wife and I have been there.

Thank you so much; I’ll take all you wrote to heart — as I’ve never been there.

An ancestor of mine was executed there for having been a fairly aggressive tory. I’m grateful that he’d had his kids by then :)
