The US Women's soccer team once again hit the headlines at the World Cup as they remained silent during the playing of The Star-Spangled Banner ahead of their match against Portugal.
The defending champions were accused of disrespect ahead of their 2023 World Cup opener against Vietnam when six of 11 US players stayed silent and did not put their hands over their hearts during the anthem.

I’ve watched quite a few of the matches in this tournament and the way it works both teams starters lineup on the field and each team’s national anthem is played, the tv shows close up shots of every player on the team.
The USA played Portugal today and every player on their team not had their hand over their heart but was singing enthusiastically, 3 of the 11 US players had their hand over their hearts and those 3 were the only players trying to sing
After watching a bunch of matches the US team is the only team acting this way
They did
+1
In my experience, it seems that athletes singing for the national anthem befor sporting events is more of a European thing — especially for those countries that have majestic national anthems. Check out any video clip of Wales when they are hosting an international rugby or soccer game if you want to see an awesome national anthem on display.
Please show me ANY team, Division I or higher, where the athletes all sing the anthem.
This is a ridiculous thing to get worked up about.
Most places they only play the national anthems is international games.
The US is kind of unusual for playing it before EVERY GAME.
How can they??
They probably don’t know the words...
See reply #12. It's not about the singing.
‘I’m still trying to figure out how this is even newsworthy.’
it’s newsworthy because the most visible participant has made public commentary degrading the USA culture, and siding with athletes who kneel as a protest at any show of patriotism...the entire team is seen through this troubled participant, as everyone else is anonymous, and thus their actions, of lack of same, becomes magnified...
particularly when the opponent makes a hearty show of respect for the country they are representing...
Perhaps but in this tournament they teams from all over world, I’ve watched Jamaica, Columbia, Morocco, Panama, Haiti and Zambia all acting the same way
I spent many years on college athletic fields. I was the sports photographer for about 25 colleges, all teams, for fourteen years. That’s a lot of games. That’s a lot of national anthems. Now add in the dozen or so pro games per year, playoffs, tournaments, and NCAA championships, and I’ve easily seen several thousand national anthems played.
I know what I am talking about.
Very few of the players had their hand on their hearts. Even fewer sang.
Most stood there with their heads bowed, their feet moving, and focused on the start of the game. Military schools were the ONLY teams with a unified stance during the anthem (for obvious reasons.)
I understand why people want to dislike this team—I do. But the outrage over this is misplaced.
I am enjoying this team, with their equitable pay, under performing. They are proving that higher pay doesn’t equate with higher performance.
I’ll bet you’ll find none of the players singing, and few (if any) even holding their hands over their hearts.
That’s a lot of games. That’s a lot of national anthems.

How many of these games were international games?
“They were just awful, out of shape, not team players. I guess they spent too much time doing woke TV instead of practicing.”

For sure. Their lack of conditioning was obvious against Portugal. There needs to be a good old fashioned purge. Get rid of any and all players who refuse to stand respectfully for the national anthem and sing it with their hand over their heart. Also, eliminate rainbow jerseys and such. Bottom line; any who refuses to recognize they’re playing for their country and not themselves shouldn’t be allowed on the team. Lastly, can we finally be done with Meagan Rapone?
Here is the best I can find, the Gold Medal ceremony, Mike Eruzione, team captain had his hand over his heart and a quick shot of the team didn’t show all of their hands but it looked like all were singing
They didn't represent the U.S. national team.
MSM agitprop.
No one cares if athletes “sing” the Anthem. This is outrage bait to get clicks.
Kneeling, turning away from the flag, and such, are a different story. Standing quietly during the playing of the Athem is perfectly fine and normal.
Some of them did….
As soon as I saw their uniform numbers painted with the homosexual rainbow colors, I said “nope, not a supporter”.
I watched it. It was a different time back then.
