This one of a later moon landing, not funny, kinda poignant. The way they keep talking about peace for all mankind makes me a little sad, considering all the wars we’ve had since then:

The moon landings seemed to bring us all together somehow, seeing those pictures of our little blue planet from the moon, in awe that human beings were up there on the moon, and here we mortal, fragile (but amazing) humans all were, sharing our beautiful blue planet here. It really did make one yearn for peace and goodwill for all, as if we could look down at ourselves and our world like God and the angels do for the first time. Yes, I know I sound sappy, but it seemed people all over the world felt that way at the time.

Words said when Armstrong first stepped onto the Moon (20 July 1969) One Small Step, transcript of Apollo 11 Moon landing. In the actual sound recordings he apparently fails to say "a" before "man" and says: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." This was generally considered by many to simply be an error of omission on his part. Armstrong long insisted he did say "a man" but that it was inaudible. Prior to new evidence supporting his claim, he stated a preference for the "a" to appear in parentheses when the quote is written. The debate continues on the matter, as "Armstrong's 'poetic' slip on Moon" at BBC News (3 June 2009) reports that more recent analysis by linguist John Olsson and author Chris Riley with higher quality recordings indicates that he did not say "a".

There’s some rewriting of history going on (gasp! the government would never…!). I remember hearing the phrase on that day - as he spoke it, and no “a” was heard. There was confusion about it at the time, and it’s been a contentious issue ever since.

Actually I’ve gotten access to telescopes big enough to see the parts of the landers that are still on the moon. It’s good to have friends in cool places.

I’ve thought that too. Some of the images MIGHT be from a set or area where they practiced with to-scale models. And filmed it to review. And some of those MAY have made it onto TV to add to the story. The moon landing was in huge part due to our arms race with the Soviets. We used it for propaganda as well as science. And good propaganda needs good images.
