Tanzania: Men Wearing Braids Violates Law and Morals - Zanzibar Govt

Days after authorities in Zanzibar said men are banned from braiding their hair on the island, Minister of Information, Youth, Culture, and Sports Tabia Maulid Mwita, apologised for the confusion caused by the statement.

Mwita said the 2015 law being enforced is meant only for Zanzibar men, not those from outside the isles.

Men face a fine of more than U.S.$400, six months in jail, or both, if they break the law.

"We find it dangerous to our future generations. This is one form of immorality in Zanzibar, it is a culture which is adopted from outside Zanzibar," executive secretary of the Council of Arts, Film, and Culture in Zanzibar Omar Adam said.

The government denies the ban is linked to their crackdown on the use of the rainbow color scheme and 16 books in classrooms on the grounds that they supported LGBTQI+ rights, but the Education Minister Adolf Mkenda justified that ban by using the same wording - "immoral content that violates the country's cultural norms, morals and good practices".

In May, 2023, The Travel named Zanzibar as number one destination for tourists in Africa.

I don't know much about Zanzibar, but what is the Zanzibar Govt. going to do if Black people from Europe, the US, and other places want to visit Zanzibar and spend money there? Kick them out or lock them up?

Neither.

The law applies to locals not to visitors.

This isn't much different to me from Muslim rulers demanding that women cover their heads or faces, assuming that they are demonstrating some kind of looseness/lack of morals, etc.

That would be because they are mohammedans.

Countries can make any laws they like; that doesn’t mean they’re right or good.

They’re not going to stop drug or ‘rainbow’ cultures from getting into their country by inhibiiting hairstyles, for goodness’ sake. And they’re going to cause a whole lot of trouble to innocent people with this. The poorest old peasant there could tell them these things.

Next, they’ll have ‘State Approved’ hairstyles, like North Korea:

You would be surprised at what can be stopped by smacking the person who tried to take your dinner roll.

Will this work? Maybe.

But since mohammedans are cool with the idea that you can make a man into a women by chopping off body parts, probably not.

I think it all gets kind of 'iffy' when money is involved - on both sides.
