Tanzania: Men Wearing Braids Violates Law and Morals - Zanzibar Govt
AllAfrica.com ^ | 7/13/2023 | Jerry Chifamba

Days after authorities in Zanzibar said men are banned from braiding their hair on the island, Minister of Information, Youth, Culture, and Sports Tabia Maulid Mwita, apologised for the confusion caused by the statement.

Mwita said the 2015 law being enforced is meant only for Zanzibar men, not those from outside the isles.

Men face a fine of more than U.S.$400, six months in jail, or both, if they break the law.

"We find it dangerous to our future generations. This is one form of immorality in Zanzibar, it is a culture which is adopted from outside Zanzibar," executive secretary of the Council of Arts, Film, and Culture in Zanzibar Omar Adam said.

The government denies the ban is linked to their crackdown on the use of the rainbow color scheme and 16 books in classrooms on the grounds that they supported LGBTQI+ rights, but the Education Minister Adolf Mkenda justified that ban by using the same wording - "immoral content that violates the country's cultural norms, morals and good practices".

In May, 2023, The Travel named Zanzibar as number one destination for tourists in Africa.

“Tanzania: Men Wearing Braids Violates Law and Morals - Zanzibar Govt”

Good to hear that at least parts of Africa are not into the anything-goes (including war with Russia) lifestyle that Europe has become these days.

Zanzibar has had people for 20K years. I wonder how many African men during all those generations wore braids...

This guy is worried about tourism. How someone wears his or her hair has nothing to do with morals, only conformity. Morality goes a lot deeper.

I suppose you could say the same about men wearing dresses or makeup.

You probably had male ancestors with hair as long as their wives’. And in colonial times, they all wore white wigs AND makeup.

Go have a talk with George Washington.

Fashion is something that comes and goes. It’s never going to create morality. Mothers and Fathers do that in the home.

You are right—conformity is only surface, and morality goes a lot deeper.

There is no guarantee if the surface looks good that you won’t find cr@p underneath. However, if you find cr@p on the surface and are not willing to clean work to clean the surface up, you are guaranteed to find yourself living in a cesspool.

Zanzibar is solidly Muslim and very much influenced by Arab culture. Once it belonged to Oman (which did not abolish slavery until 1970) and was quite the hub for their very busy slave trade back in the day. What I mostly remember from reading about its history back when is an interesting character known as Tippu Tip, though.

I am surprised they didn’t throw him off a building.

I’ve got the old man’s car
And I’ve got a jazz guitar
I’ve got a tab at Zanzibar
Tonight that’s where I’ll be, I’ll be

Touché Angelino97 eheh, but you both have a valid point. The element of context is what makes both valid: Zanzibar authorities have evidently determined that braids are associated with rainbow imperialism and probably drug culture as well. And given the intensity of foreign meddling to promote both faggotry and brain mutilating drugs in Africa, they probably made the best call.

Africa could be the key to improving relations with Russia even to extent of resolution of the Ukraine issue. If US and Russia could synchronize investment in Africa they can check Chinese expansion there as well as create an economic arc of power that benefits everyone including African nations. And EU would have to choose between our system or saying “你们好” to chinese masters.

Improving relations with Russia is the last thing "The Powers That Be" want.

The cornrow braids are a female hairstyle there.

When we had guests from the US or other countries we would advise them of this and would ask them to change their hair style before coming as it would send the wrong message.

Picture a guy wearing a beehive hairdo for an equivalent.

Sadly true, but a new plan with exciting new profits to be made just might spark rifts in the monolith.

Not exactly.

If you wear your hair in certain styles in certain cultures it means different things.

A certain hair style may mean for example that you are a single female and looking for a husband. A married female or a male wearing that style is a sign that they have loose morals.

Well, sometimes people - especially young ones - just wear their hair or their clothes in the style common in fashion at the time.

I did it, everyone I know did it, when we were young. You probably did it too.

I don’t know much about Zanzibar, but what is the Zanzibar Govt. going to do if Black people from Europe, the US, and other places want to visit Zanzibar and spend money there? Kick them out or lock them up?

They should police clearly exhibited behavior, not hair. This isn’t much different to me from Muslim rulers demanding that women cover their heads or faces, assuming that they are demonstrating some kind of looseness/lack of morals, etc.
