US women’s team refuse to sing national anthem before World Cup draw with Holland.
Six players take part in silent protest labelled ‘disrespectful’ but Martina Navratilova tells critics to 'get a grip'.
The US women’s football team have sparked a divisive row at the World Cup after six players elected not to sing the national anthem in a silent ‘protest’ that was labelled “embarrassing” and “disrespectful”.
The defending world champions risked the ire of the American public for the second time in five days yesterday when more than half of the team stayed silent before their group game against Holland, which they drew 1-1.
Their actions drew a fierce backlash with high-profile critics accusing members of the squad of failing to be patriotic enough on the global stage.
The most stinging rebuke came from prominent journalist and media personality, Megyn Kelly, who said before the reigning champions’ second game of this World Cup, that they were damaging the country with their behaviour.

No, they don’t normally all sing. They are modern American young people and they behave like their peers, both the athletes on the field and the fans in the stands.
Americans mostly stand for the national anthem. Very few of us actually sing it, and we haven’t for a long time. Why would anyone expect a women’s soccer team to be any different?
Yup. Cut off the funding.
It was a protest
Obvious to. anyone who saw it and has a iota of information about thi
S group of horrjnle people.
Waste if time
“ Yup. Cut off the funding”
No. They have first amendment rights
They should show character and stop taking money transportation security and sonsorship from tge US
The people in the stands are mostly beside the point since they’re not the focus of attention. It’s natural to expect more of those out front representing the nation in an international competition.
That said, if this is the norm for the US women’s soccer team then, yeah, the special attention it’s getting may be a bit overdone.
Part of what’s driving it may be the contrast with the Vietnamese team who all had their hands on their hearts and sang.
Well, if that's the case then it's not unreasonable for people to be miffed.
Michael Jordan to his credit got that from Johnny Carson. He was asked if he was Republican and he said “I’m a comedian. Why would I alienate half my audience”?
Michael Jordan is a wise guy. I have no problems with him being a Democrat. He keeps it to himself. I'll have a glass of whiskey with him.
Just forget to allow them re-entry.
I saw that last night, and decided to pull for the Netherlands.
Several of them DID have their hands over their hearts, and were singing.
It was a fun game to watch
“ Frankly, they need to look at the ratings of who may be watching. That’s what matters.”
They don’t care. They have pushed for equal pay and gotten it despite the fact they have a tenth of the attendance and viewership of the men’s team. But that’s fair because, well, we are women and we want it.
But they’d undress in from of a male teammate without protesting ...
They were probably just ashamed of the display of the rainbow flag at the White House.
I want to see an all trans womens team clean house in that league.
Facing the rest of one's middle age in a Siberian gulag does wonders for one's cognition of reality.
But by her statement she fully supports all the soccer players still bitching about America.
And still they wonder why soccer doesn’t hit on with American football fans (the folks that spend the big bucks)… Oh, well, they’re no greater embarrassment than the stumbling mumbled we send to meet with heads of state. They might have a problem getting me to Vietnam these days.
What entire team sings the national anthem that isn’t from a fascist state?

US women’s soccer team, 2011 World Cup. The entire team has hands on hearts and is singing.
So there’s recent precedent for a US soccer team to show the expected behavior. I don’t know why you all are so eager to make excuses for the 2023 team.

If you’re going to scold people try reading what they wrote. Otherwise you look really dumb
