As Chinese President Xi Jinping brainstorms on what his country needs to get its economic rise back on track, Donald Trump probably sits high on his wish list.
Although the U.S. presidential election is still more than 15 months away, the specter of a second Trump administration is already a hot topic in Asian trading pits. Trepidation abounds given the trade wars, unhinged rhetoric, coddling of autocrats and general turbulence that characterized Trump's 2017-2021 White House stint.
A cluster of illiberal leaders, including Russia's Vladimir Putin, North Korea's Kim Jong Un, Saudi Arabia's Mohammed bin Salman and Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan, are chomping at the bit for Trump's return. But likely no one is yearning more than Xi.
This suggestion might surprise many.
Trump's chaotic presidency generated a bull market in mini crises for Beijing. Clearly, the Chinese Communist Party did not enjoy Trump's tariffs, social media tirades, xenophobic accusations about the origins of COVID-19 or financial mismanagement that put Beijing's $860 billion in dollar-linked holdings at risk.
But as Chinese growth flatlines, there is growing recognition in Beijing of just how many economic punches current U.S. President Joe Biden is landing on Beijing. Hits that, over time, are causing real economic pain.
Trump's blunderbuss administration swung wildly in all directions as it sought to make life difficult for China's economy and rarely made meaningful contact. Xi's economic policy team nimbly pivoted to limit fallout, while U.S. allies seethed in anger as they suffered collateral damage.
