Punk rock’s not dead! In fact, the misfits’ preferred brand of music is alive and thriving, thanks to a decades-long legacy of music that has grown into a set of sub-genres spanning everything from Goth and new wave to cowpunk. Whether you’re in the mood for pop punk, classics, the new generation, or something in between, we’ve got you covered with our list of the best punk bands of all time.
These are listed in no particular order, just the 33 bands we like the most:
1. Black Flag

Green Day are phony posers.
No Fear??
Push a razor blade into your nose!
Whip your partner with a rubber hose!
Spit at the band, ‘cause that’s the way it goes!
Do The Punk Polka!
—Punk Polka
by The Toons
Yep, Greenday are Big time posers
I would have added The Offspring over Green Day.
How does Social Distortion and the Plasmatics NOT get into the top 10 and posers Green Day are where they are?
America stands for freedom
But if you think you’re free
Try walking into a deli
And urinating on the cheese
-The Vandals “Anarchy Burger (Hold The Government)”
All I wanted was a Pepsi, just one Pepsi!
The Clash really weren’t punk after their first album.
This list also settles a longstanding argument between me and a childhood friend: Suicidal is a punk rock band!!!!
Lemme always described Motorhead as a punk band... Guess some folks don’t agree. I do. Shoulda been on this list in place of Green Day.
Ramones. Ramones. Anti-Commie Warrior Johnny Ramone.
I would add 2 of my faves and drop Green Day and Blink. Anti Nowhere League and Stiff Little Fingers. Right on with Ramones, Sex Pistols. The Clash, Black Flag, DK and Social Distortion. I even like the Donnas. There are quite a lot of bands that should be honorable mentions.
No to Green Day. Swap them out for The Idles. No to Blink 182, let’s get X in there. Probably dump Gen X go with Fear or TSOL instead. Much as I enjoy the Pistols Lydon’s “other” band Public Image Ltd is so much better, and has a new album coming next month. And I’d probably expand The Stooges entry to include all of Iggy’s career, he’s still making solid punk too.
Over all though, not a terrible list. As these lists go, usually half of them are complete garbage. This one I’m only arguing with about 10%.
Yep, Green Day suck big time. I would replace them with the Dead Milkmen.
No. Lemme said Motorhead played rock and roll. He didn’t like them being in any subcategory.
And not really a punk band, but honorable mention goes to Ian Dury and The Blockheads. Two fat persons, click, click, click.
Great band.
Where’s Rancid?
The Police - Fall Out (Live 1979)
Besides, all the great punk bands formed before 1980, back when Billie Joe Armstrong was still in second grade.
