I remember when a public rocket launch was something to stay home from school and watch on TV. The first time I did that was when Alan Shepard did the first American-in-space flight. I stood at attention, too -- I was proud as could be of my country!
Today's launches are no less remarkable from a technological point of view, some even more so. But nobody much cares any more, it's become commonplace.
I consider that a mixed blessing. It's nice that we can take this wonderful engineering for granted, but kind of a shame that we as a population do, too.
Disclaimer: At 71, I still retain my child-like wonder. But I expect I'm an exception.
