A tug boat sank in the Tennessee River over the weekend, dumping thousands of gallons of diesel fuel into the water and closing beaches and parks in Alabama.
After the boat sank it began to release somewhere between 3,000 and 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel into the river, police in the northwestern city of Florence said Sunday.
Soon after, diesel fuel began washing up on the shore of the beaches at McFarland Park around 10 a.m. Sunday morning, police said.
Authorities quickly began getting people out of the water, and continue to urge locals to avoid swimming and going on the beaches until further notice.
Resident RJ Gibson, who was swimming nearby Sunday morning, said the smell of fuel was strong and that he could see a shiny rainbow coloration in the river.

It will degrade.
Guess they wrecked too many trains full of toxic chemicals so now it’ll be tugs.
From the inter-web:
How long does it take for diesel to evaporate?
Diesel fuel is most often a light, refined petroleum product. Small diesel spills will usually evaporate and disperse within a day or less. This is particularly true for typical spills from a fishing vessel (500- 5,000 gallons), even in cold water. Thus, seldom is there any oil on the surface for responders to recover.
Dawn industrial detergent, emulsifies diesel/oil fuels into water, and the water can be vacuumed up and filter or distill out the petrochemicals. Entire industries specialize in this— and they weren’t created by the freaking EPA.
The emulsified in water petrochemicals can also be tanked and reacted with bacteria which EAT the solvated chemicals.
Interesting——thanks!
Microbes that eat hydrocarbons. They exist in nature. Humans can also deploy them.
Nature is pretty amazing. That still doesnt make the Earth a god...
Interesing
In the meantime, downwind, the mosquitos probably are vacating the area. A silver lining.
Thanks for a nice dose of reality... I hate liberal/environmental hysteria bullsh*t posts.
So do I, and a bit of reality/rationality from mr 44.
4,000 gallons at $4 per gallon is $16,000. Or if you make 40 mpg a total of 160,000 miles could have been driven.
Mean boat to do such a thing.
Bounty...The picker upper...
that’s the usual for old gas stations.
Far better than 12,000lb lithium battery.
Where I used to work when we had an oil spill we would put a boom around it and throw oil diapers into the spill. The oil diapers absorb oil but not water and are fished out and disposed of properly. We would do this until we decided the Coast Guard wasn’t going to show up or, if they did show up, we would do it till they left. Then we forgot about it and went on with normal activities.
