When Alicia Griggs steps outside her suburban Fort Lauderdale home, Florida’s latest invasive species comes a-hoppin’ down the street: lionhead rabbits.
The bunnies, which sport an impressive flowing mane around their heads, want the food Griggs carries. But she also represents their best chance of survival and moving where this domesticated breed belongs: inside homes, away from cars, cats, hawks, Florida heat and possibly government-hired exterminators.
Griggs is spearheading efforts to raise the $20,000 to $40,000 it would cost for a rescue group to capture, neuter, vaccinate, shelter and then give away the estimated 60 to 100 lionheads now populating Jenada Isles, an 81-home community in Wilton Manors.

Tastes like crap. You couldn’t pay me to eat rabbit.
I thought there is an alligator, python, problem in Florida? If so, I doubt the bunnies are much of an issue?
I’m sure Darks is involved somehow.
Never understood the idea of rabbits as pets.
And I certainly never understood the idea of just letting your unwanted pet loose in the wild.
Cruel and irresponsible.
Okay, that is a beautiful bunny right there. I loved my rabbits when I had them. Smarter than cats, so personable.
Yes, actually.
And don't feed them after midnight or else!..................
First time I had rabbit I thought it was chicken until I was informed otherwise.
Went back for a second helping.
My daughter many years ago had a rabbit, Mr. Wiggles, that would come and sit by me when I was working in the garden or yard...................
Alfalfa fed rabbits are quite tasty. De-boned, dredged in flour, pan fried in bacon grease, salt, pepper, and savory herbs. Also only butcher them in late fall and winter. Don’t consume them in warm months. I’m not sure why? But the flavor and meat texture is different. Not as good.
I’ve eaten farm raised rabbit before, and it’s not bad.
Wild rabbit is something else, though........
My niece had one it use to kick and bite my brother. He hated it.
I have hunted and eaten cottontail rabbits. Ok to eat. Never ate domestic rabbits but I assume they would be less gamey
Looks like a fancy breed of oversized hamsters.
Its not just Ft Lauderdale. Palm Beach County, too
No thanks. Those things don’t see a hard freeze which means they’re probably full of parasites. The cold kills the bugs and makes the rabbit safe to eat.
I hunted a lot of cotton tail as a kid and was always told only eat them when there is a R in the month. I dont know why either.
Why don’t they shoot tem and eat them?
DeForest Kelly was in Night Of The Lepus.
Interesting!.................
