Astronomy Picture of the Day - Meteor and Milky Way over the Alps

Explanation: Now this was a view with a thrill. From Mount Tschirgant in the Alps, you can see not only nearby towns and distant Tyrolean peaks, but also, weather permitting, stars, nebulas, and the band of the Milky Way Galaxy. What made the arduous climb worthwhile this night, though, was another peak -- the peak of the 2018 Perseids Meteor Shower. As hoped, dispersing clouds allowed a picturesque sky-gazing session that included many faint meteors, all while a carefully positioned camera took a series of exposures. Suddenly, a thrilling meteor -- bright and colorful -- slashed down right next to the nearly vertical band of the Milky Way. As luck would have it, the camera caught it too. Therefore, a new image in the series was quickly taken with one of the sky-gazers posing on the nearby peak. Later, all of the images were digitally combined.

I’ve never seen the Milky Way. Do you need a special telescope? Or can anyone see the Milky Way outside of urban areas?

The Milky Way is easy to see on clear nights away from light sources. When I lived in the Colorado Rocky Mountains it was very clear.

Are you slamming me or NASA. Because you addressed this remark to me. I have told you before that I only post the NASA photos that they post each day. I have no control over their choices. If you want something to change then you can beat your head against the wall emailing the woke leftists at NASA management like I have. Good luck.

Yep, yesterday. I explained more nicely then to she/her. They are volunteering to take over this thread because it does not pay enough for me to put up with the shit. Or maybe I will just track all of she/her posts and rain down crap on them. Turnabout and all that.

well, we all get irritated from time to time put people such as yourself do deserve a little bit a tact...(A little bit...) for going over and above posting the attractions you do. and, although I am not a Highly Renowned freeper, I have found over the years that a simple “Piss Off” works wonders on some of the lowborn... just sayin!

5 years ago is less than an attosecond in the greater scheme.

Why point it out?

You just have to be where the sky is darker. Out in the country away from bright lights. Also, the Milky Way is Summer/Fall sight.

I appreciate you posting these every day, thanks. You don’t have any control over what NASA puts out there.
