The Healthiest (& Unhealthiest) Countries in the World
Statista ^ | 07/07/2023 | Anna Fleck

Posted on 07/07/2023 8:45:14 PM PDT by SeekAndFind

It's been 75 years since the start of the United Kingdom’s National Health Service, the first universal health system available to all, free at the point of delivery.

In light of this, Statista's Anna Fleck looks at how different health systems compare around the world, using data from Legatum Prosperity Index, created by The Legatum Institute Foundation, a London think tank.

As the following chart shows, the UK ranks in 34th place out of the 167 indexed countries and territories, based on not only its healthcare system (such as access to health services) but also its population’s state of health (including mortality rates, illness and risk factors).

While fairly high, the country has been sliding down the list for the Health category, having placed in 23rd position in 2019, 20th in 2016 and 19th in 2013.

According to the index, Singapore was rated as having the top service and state of health globally in 2023.

Asia is well represented generally, with the four top places rounded off by Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.

Meanwhile, the United States trails just behind the UK in rank 38.

The bottom five places are Somalia, Lesotho, Chad, South Sudan and the Central African Republic.

The ranking was created as part of a wider index, which also looks at indicators such as education, investment environment and governance. When taking all analyzed areas into account, the Legatum Centre for National Prosperity says that the Nordic countries of Denmark, Sweden and Norway come out on top as the most prosperous societies.

The UK is “healthier” than the USA?
How about Cuba? China? Russia? Ukraine?
I think the study is a waste of money.

Woo Hoo! We’re 69! We’re 69!

I admit, I pretty much stopped paying attention to these things after all those years of hearing how good healthcare was in Cuba.

“based on not only its healthcare system (such as access to health services)”

Yeah, access.

This principle was recognized in the 2005 Supreme Court of Canada case of Chaoulli v. Quebec, the same case in which Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin pointedly observed: “Access to a waiting list is not access to health care.”

I was once sitting in a restaurant with some others from the church my wife and I attend. A man across from me chose the triple patty cheeseburger with bacon, fries, and later, a big dessert. I felt sorry for the guy. There he was, 5’8” and 300 pounds, and readily admits to people that he needs to lose weight. Just no will power to do so.

How about value of health care system?

Bet the US would rank in the bottom decile.

Not available, too crowded, too many non-payers and too expensive for those who do pay.

BINGO. No healthcare in the world can fix the problems created by eating crap, smoking, and drinking alcohol while barely being able to walk from the car to the elevator without breaking into a sweat.

If you want a good life then eat good food and exercise every day and then once a year go see the doctor to confirm that you are doing the right things.

Sure thing. That’s why everyone tried to go to Singapore to get their surgeries done

The US is still the best health care available anywhere

Surprised that Haiti is not at the very bottom. It’s why the entire miserable population is trying to get into the USA.

With so many variables at play, one can come up with any result one wants. Nor would I accept all variables at face value. Color me skeptical.

“free at the point of delivery”

Funny how these socialist programs are always free.

You last line; true in some regard not so much in others.
If you have coverage you're good. If not an ER is required by law to treat you and if you have no insurance there are programs you can access. True in that illegals over a lot of ERs including the one I work in. I hate them.
