The average person accidentally consumes one pound of bugs each year, according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).
This is because fruits, vegetables, spices and many processed foods are legally permitted by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to contain tiny levels of bug parts, which add up over time.
For example, fig paste can contain up to 13 insect heads in 100 grams, canned fruit juices can have a maggot for every 250 milliliters and 10 grams of hops used to make beer can be the home for 2,500 small sap-sucking insects.
And while there is much debate over the number of bugs we consume in our sleep, scientists agree that it is not zero.

Eating insects may not sound appetizing, but most people consume them daily without realizing it.
The FDA's Food Detects Levels Handbook outlines the amount of insect heads, thoraxes, legs and even whole bugs that are allowed in a specific food.
There can be up to five whole insects in Apple Butter, 500 grams of larva in berries and 10 percent of packaged coffee beans are allowed to be infested with critters.
And after you have eaten 220 pounds of chocolate in your life, you can be sure you also consumed one pound of bugs.

If you take a first date to a restaurant, and she orders a large buttered sea bug, she’s planning on putting out.
They wriggle and jiggle inside ...
That’s why I prefer Kosher food brands when possible, but we are omnivores and we wouldn’t be so picky if food wasn’t abundant.
“Translation: you eat bugs anyway without knowing it. Just make ‘em a regular part of your diet and be happy.”
My thoughts exactly.
“When they make beef and chicken illegal for little people, and force us just to eat bugs, I will barely notice the difference”
That is the purpose of this article
Eat Mor Bugz.
I knew a chemist who worked for Campbell’s Soup, analyzing this kind of stuff.
Honestly, I’m not hijacking this wonderfully strange post.
But here’s a list of preceeding posts that are still up.

Well, six of those are mine. So, sorry or you’re welcome, depending what you think of them.
I will never forget 40 years ago the big family size bar of Hershey that we opened full of maggots. Took it back to DrugFair and they opened the others to find more maggots.
That was beyond the pale!
When we deployed to 4-Corp we picked up flour to make bread in the Philippines, so the bread always had lot of dead black bugs about the size of sesame seeds.
It’s good for us.

BRING ON THE BUGS!
Nick, I was trying to get it posted so quickly I didn’t notice.
Anyone ever tell you that you have a very interesting mind? Lol.
You do.
And your posts are very much appreciated. Thanks! :-)
It looks like the author is confusing the maximum amount of impurities allowed by law with the actual amount in packaged food. “canned fruit juices can have a maggot for every 250 milliliters”, but would you buy it again if you found a maggot in every bottle?
I’m reminded of a couple of old urban legends that everyone swallows at least one spider in their sleep every night, and the one that went around when Bubble Yum first hit the market when I was a kid, and folks in the playground were saying that the reason it was so soft and chewy was because it contained spider eggs. :P
Obviously this isn’t new. It must not harm us too much because humans have been eating food with some bugs or bug parts or larvae in it all along.
I recall hearing it 20+ years ago but it was specifically about spiders for some reason.
Freegards
There is NO way I ingest that much buggitude.
My grandmother grew up on a farm. She often used to say, “There’s a pound of dirt in everybody.”
