My elderly mom has them all the time. She exhibits dementia symptoms when she has them.

So when she goes loopy...we have to use deductive reasoning.

UTI (check)
Low sodium (check)
Low blood sugar (check)
Dehydration (check)
Forgetting meds (check)

It’s a constant battle.

I doubt that douching with Kefir would help.

“Direct insert into the urethra for cystitis?”

Article says “vaginal”. Didn’t make sense to me, either, considering it’s for UTIs. Two separate “parts”.

Still, I’d try anything. For a few years I’ve taken D-Mannose prophylactically and it has helped some. Still, I’d rather get none again ever.

“The yeast is from taking antibiotics.”

It’s a vicious chain of events. Get UTI. Take antibiotics. Yeast infection a half-hour later. I can only take Cipro since Septra / Bactrim result in yeast infection; Cipro doesn’t.

“For those saving pennies, make some yogurt.”

I could do yogurt suppository if there is such a thing, but no way could I gag down yogurt orally. So disgusting that I have to leave the room when Hubby eats it. ew ... that smell.

“I read somewhere where children born via C Section often are missing the necessary bacteria needed in their gut that they obtain by being born vaginally.”

There was a thread about that here a few weeks ago. IIRC, it has to do with the fact that during birth babies are exposed, to a small to degree, to Mom’s “poop”. There’s something in it that protects the babies future health. Sounds weird, but what do I know? LOL!

“UTI (check)”

Ditto for my mom. She lives with my brother’s family in another state. Sometimes when we talk on the phone she makes no sense at all — “loopy”, as you say. When I hang up I call my sister-in-law and tell her it sounds like Mom might have a UTI — and she does.

The elderly usually don’t “feel” the typical symptoms of UTI, so it can go untreated. It can kill you. Mom was in the hospital for a week with a vicious UTI.

“Note the key word may help prevent...”

I read Amazon reviews for one of the most used of these. Nobody said UTIs ended. There was “seem to be less severe”, “less frequent”, “seems to have helped”. A lot of “seems to” there.

I do not blame you. I hate, loathe, and despise the runny stuff. Greek yogurt is only acceptable when sweetened; I use stevia; and with peaches ladled in and frozen. The suppository works.

Therein lies the conundrum. Yogurt is one of my fav foods. Only plain yogurt, for I am a yogurt purist, as is my 91 yo mother. Yogurt keeps everything in balance.

Use the same equipment that you would for other vaginal treatments.

Seriously?

Well, I’m not going to be explicit on this forum, but I have had some that have been thoroughly washed and been able to be reused, so YES!

I don’t recommend this if you have access to good health care. But that isn’t always available. This is just a method that helps when necessary. Sheesh!

Trust me, I’ve been through it all. I know a lot from being constant victim. And yeast happens for other reasons. I’ve gotten them before I had recurring UTI.

The other issue is that the ur is too close to the v. It is easy to travel from the v to the ur and ruin everything. Likely the v gets the E Coli from the anus, as that is usually mentioned as a major reason women suffer from UTIs more than men. All the openings are too close together.

Oh, and the intestines are not wrapped around v and ur, and they are also isolated via the female organs and bladder. So no, it isn’t really close. Only the openings are close, all of them.

Bless your heart for thinking this RN needs anatomy lessons. The idea of inserting yogurt into any orifice other than the oral route is repulsive.

I could imagine a couple circumstances where it might be fun. But neither of those are “clinical.” LOL.

I’m sorry, Nauti. I figured you must be an RN but honestly, the intestines are just so vast and only a little bit really is close, the rectum.

Also, I thought we were referring to the article wherein they talk of a suppository. Not the yogurt, though I have heard many people discussing that as well as other things like oils to insert.

Anyway, I apologize for any offense. You are not one I wish to upset.

My original post offered a number of food items which contain lactobacillus. I was flatly told that does not work. I disagree.

There are a zillion potions and products marketed because people are willing to pay big bucks for a promise that is usually available via a well balanced diet.

I stated “they” referring to the researchers. And the suppository.

Otherwise I was just giving my experience. I didn’t mean to be smarmy or anything, but yes, I did state it does “little”, not “doesn’t work”. Just from my past.
