The 50 Best Sci-Fi Movies of the 21st Century, from ‘Nope’ to ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’
IndieWire ^ | July 28, 2022 | Kate Erbland, Chris O'Falt, Alison Foreman

Yes, science fiction is rooted in profound origins, examining humanity’s deep-seated fear of itself and the intimidating possibility of worlds unknown. But the last two decades have seen a metaphoric rush on sci-fi storytelling that’s left the once niche subgenre a supersaturated movie market. On the one hand, that’s produced an onslaught of sci-fi(ish) titles that aren’t always up to snuff. But on the other, it’s prompted some of the best sci-fi films ever made. Masterworks like “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Nope” both arrived this year, and top our list at number five and number eight respectively....

Simply put: In determining the 50 best sci-fi movies of the 21st century, you must draw a line in the sand — even if that’s the sands of Arrakis. To that end, a few rules have been set.

No fantasy-centric superhero movies will appear here, and the same goes for those space-borne fantasy franchises “Star Wars” and “Star Trek.” For an action, horror, or animated movie to make it onto this list, it needs to be firmly rooted in sci-fi origins and make notable use of the tropes and themes therein.

See post #8.

For me the best scifi seems to be multi-part shows on Netflix and Amazon. To wit: The Expanse, The Peripheral, Manifest.

Can we include animated movies like Meet the Robinsons?

The original version of Dune ‘blowed’.

It blows less that this second rate knock off an abomination.

A. I. is fine. It’s just a bleak depressing movie. But it was well written and played.

We all love the oldies. I have Forbidden Planet and the original WOTW on DVD . . . somewhere.

District 9, was good.

Idiocracy, is sci-fi in its premise. It’s a comedy that is rapidly becoming a documentary. Elysium, is what I jokingky call its prequel.

Scanner Darkly, was good if you enjoyed the book.

Serenity, was Han Solo: The Movie before Disney made Solo.

Looper, was fine.

Cloud Atlas, was abysmal.

Thankfully, have seen none of these turkeys. Read Dune; everyone says the movie(s) is/are awful.

There is a DVD set of the SciFi channel version of Dune and Children of Dune. They follow the two books pretty closely. They are good movies.

Boring and the sound was horrible. It was like mumbling, hard to hear.

The Wrath of Kahn

21st century, though. And it's "Khan".

"The remake of “The Time Machine” .

The reboot of the Time Machine was just slightly more interesting because of CGI, but still relied on the Morlock/Eloi conflict.

also missing, and “Hunger Games”.

Hunger Games was strong, but I don't include it in sci-fi genre. More like future fantasy of competing societies.

I agree about the Sci-Fi Channel Dune and Children of Dune TV serials. The production is spotty: closer to well-produced Doctor Who episodes. But the story is right out of the books. The cast takes it seriously and for the most part worthy of a film with a larger budget. It is ambitious and has a lot of heart. Overall I was very entertained and enjoyed it a great deal.

The list was restricted to movies since 2000. The Golden Oldies are off-limits.

You call it the worst list you have ever seen. How many of these films have you actually seen?

When I scan a list like this, or a list of selections for a major film festival, I figure that if I find five excellent movies out of 50 — “excellent” being movies that I like a lot — it’s a decent list. Ten solid films is outstanding.

I don’t have any difficulty finding ten films on this list that are worth a watch. Lists like this are a lead generation service. That’s all.

I saw the movie as a kid on VHS or something and it scared the beegeezus out of me when that creature hit the electric fence. I was scared for weeks after that.

Out of the 50, I've started watching them all (I say "started" because most I didn't make it to the 45-minute mark; "Snowpiercer" I didn't make through the intro since I saw it was an uncredited rip-off of one of my favorite Amiga games). Having said that...

No "V for Vendetta"? Shame!

There should also be "The Prestige (come on now: David Bowie as Tesla? Yes, please!) and "Monsters". Special mention really should go to "Sputnik", the Russian alien movie from 2020.

Stopping now before I hit "wall of text" syndrome. :)

I would say the movie on that list that gave me the most to think about was "Children of Men"

What do we become when there is no hope left for a future?

And when that hope suddenly comes back what changes will you make to keep it?
