The 50 Best Sci-Fi Movies of the 21st Century, from ‘Nope’ to ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’

Yes, science fiction is rooted in profound origins, examining humanity’s deep-seated fear of itself and the intimidating possibility of worlds unknown. But the last two decades have seen a metaphoric rush on sci-fi storytelling that’s left the once niche subgenre a supersaturated movie market. On the one hand, that’s produced an onslaught of sci-fi(ish) titles that aren’t always up to snuff. But on the other, it’s prompted some of the best sci-fi films ever made. Masterworks like “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Nope” both arrived this year, and top our list at number five and number eight respectively....

Simply put: In determining the 50 best sci-fi movies of the 21st century, you must draw a line in the sand — even if that’s the sands of Arrakis. To that end, a few rules have been set.

No fantasy-centric superhero movies will appear here, and the same goes for those space-borne fantasy franchises “Star Wars” and “Star Trek.” For an action, horror, or animated movie to make it onto this list, it needs to be firmly rooted in sci-fi origins and make notable use of the tropes and themes therein.

Interstellar was better than I hoped. It should have made the list.

“As for my favorites off the top of my head, without looking at my movie racks:”

The 2014 remake of “The Thing” should be on the list.

Entertaining concept, but with okay acting and stupid spaceship chases. The ending was the best part of the movie. "Sally, the TET, says to Cruise in the TET mothership, "I AM your God"
Cruise says, "Fuck you Sally" and ignites the nuke. Cool dialog.

Engaging romps of the kill-the-alien/bad guy/monster variety: Looper, Edge of Tomorrow.

Edge of Tomorrow was great.

Ender’s Game should be on the worst list.

But “Everything...Once” was loathsome.

Yeah highly overrated. I didn't even make it all the way through.

My fave is Buckaroo Banzai.

I really liked that movie. Every time I talk to someone named "John" I think about all the aliens having "John" in their name, like John BigBoote. "BIG-BOO-TAY! TAY! TAY!", not BigBooty.

I’m a few years older than you but James Arness (Yes, THAT James Arness of Gunsmoke) as the original ‘The Thing’ - that gave me nightmares for a long time.

Haha, I think John Bigboote was played by Christopher Lloyd.

Funny - that actress’ voice I couldn’t get out of my head “Are we an Excellent Team”? - Melissa Leo.
A year later she’d be Denzel Washington’s CIA hook in Equalizer (and murdered in Equalizer 2) and also Defense Secretary in Olympus has Fallen and London Has Fallen.

yes, sorry to hijack the thread. Just that some faces and voices stick with you years later (where did I know that voice?)

"Edge of Tomorrow was great."

That movie is fun to watch as Cruise realizes what's happening to him. His expression changes every time he's killed and wakes up. Other than that, it's a shoot'em up. I also thought the ending was weak when he wakes up in the original helicopter and everything is back to normal after killing the Omega. They could have done more with it than such a feel goody ending.

But that's why producers/directors have test audiences. Personally, I'm good with downer or surprise endings.

"Knowing" had a bad ending. However, the fact that the aliens transported many children to another world compensated.

I also thought everything everywhere was a dumb as dirt movie. it was a rip off of a good chinese movie with a young man and his fat buddy bumbing thru life and he discovers the secret of “the hand”. sorry, cant ReCall its name. more kung fu but really good. huge fight scene at the end to defeat the most lethal man on earth who could become a toad...

Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy as a feature film was an abomination. It was not in any way good.
