In the growing season, weeds are sprouting continuously. This is especially so after every rain. Part of conventional weed control strategy is to spray a herbicide after the crop reaches enough height to cover or shade the ground below so the crop can gain an upper hand over newly sprouting weeds. It doesn’t appear the laser is much good but for that first pass in newly planted fields.

Getting rid of pesky life forms with death rays is old news. Already figured out.

Next ... a slimmed down residential version for getting rid of weeds in your yard. Robbie the robot will eventually be able to handle most yard work chores.

How fast does it kill humans?

I could see the development of a lawn roomba, like the robotic vacuum cleaner. It would do a patch of lawn, cutting and weeding, go recharge, and do the next section.

It is an alternative to chemicals.
Possible money saver.

Bayer will have to buy up the patents to protect their RoundUp kingdom.

The way those weeds catch fire makes me worry about wildfires that could be sparked that way.

The sight of that bare dirt makes my skin crawl. It does NOT look healthy!

You may want to avoid Nevada...

I have been playing with lasers since the 70s, and I swear that looks like a giant helium neon tube, even though I cant think of a single reason why is should be.

A great way to reduce pesticides.

I am guessing in the future it could easily target insects, snails and all kinds of little furry creatures.

Yes, but will it work against triffids?

It sure grabs one’s attention quickly, though.

“... the crop reaches enough height to cover or shade the ground below so the crop can gain an upper hand over newly sprouting weeds”

That theory sure doesn’t work for my lawn.

So, the death ray kills weeds faster than it kills humans. Not to worry, our leaders will fix it so it identifies humans and zaps them more effectively before voting season.

“A weed is a plant that’s growing where you don’t want it to...”

The video makes that point. They are obliterating lettuce that sprouted in the wrong location, i.e., thinning the lettuce field. The machine can do thinning and weeding at the same time.

“lawn roomba,”

That was one of my first thoughts, too! There would be a huge residential market.

That theory sure doesn’t work for my lawn.

If you cut the lawn regularly, you should not be finicky about the greenery covering the ground. This is the problem with homeowners who insist on not having a single weed on their lawn. Most weeds will survive even though they are cut off regularly and they will try to produce a seed head closer to the ground. In my opinion, fighting weeds on the lawn with chemicals is expensive and not environmentally justified.

Now, in the case of Mr. Weed...

his rate is probably the mean of the two groups (weeds and people).   (And I don't mean Mr. Mean.)
