The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has approved a British biotech firm’s application to release 2.4 million genetically altered mosquitoes into the wild as an “experimental pesticide product.”
Via NBC News:
The experimental public health effort, which still requires final approval from state regulators, follows the 2021 release of 144,000 genetically modified mosquitoes in the Florida Keys by British biotech firm Oxitec.
Oxitec said its genetically modified male, and thus non-biting, mosquitoes “find and mate with invasive female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, mediating a reduction of the target population as the female offspring of these encounters cannot survive,” thus reducing the overall population…
Oxitec’s mosquito release — which the EPA calls an “experimental pesticide product” — can take place in a 34,760-acre area across the two states between now and April 30, 2024, when the experiment ends.
Via Oxitec’s press release announcing FDA approval (emphasis added):
Oxitec, the leading developer of biological pest control solutions, is proud to announce the publication by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of its approval to conduct pilot projects of Oxitec’s safe, non-biting, Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in California and Florida. Two pilot projects were approved, one with the Delta Mosquito and Vector Control District (Delta MVCD) in California and one with the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District (FKMCD) in Florida.
This approval is an extension of the Experimental Use Permit (EUP) granted in 2020 by the EPA for a pilot project in the Florida Keys, which was successfully carried out in 2021. Alongside its in-depth scientific evaluation process was a 30-day period for public comments. The EPA reviewed and responded to each public comment before issuing its approval…

Mosquitos haven’t been that prevalent in central Florida in the last couple of years. Not sure why they are doing this.
Why don’t they do this experiment in the UK or somewhere else other than Florida and CA? Living in Florida, if something goes wrong, it’s the people in this state and CA that will be affected. It seems that every time some company or government sponsored entity does experiments, it does something unintended that hurts people, animals or plants. That’s why there’s a huge kudzu vine problem in FL. Or the ladybug problem. Bioengineered mosquitoes...mmmm. What could possibly go wrong?
When I lived in south Florida for a couple of years, I was appalled at the monthly spraying from the air. Who knew what the spray would do to fruit and vegetables? I’ve always bought organic and of course, paid a bit more for it. But why bother when it’s covered with mosquito spray of any kind.
The experiment is done only where certain types of mosquitos exist, both in the Lower Keys and Upper Keys. My area is one of them. It’s all on the up and up.I know these people they are all first class.
Ok. I am up north almost on the FL/GA border. We do have the little pests since we live in the woods. Thanks for the reply.
SeekAndFind :" .. Aedes aegypti mosquito, which has invaded communities in Florida, California and other U.S. states.
In California, since first being detected in 2013, this mosquito has rapidly spread to more than 20 counties throughout the state,
increasing the risk of transmission of dengue, chikungunya, Zika, yellow fever and other diseases."
" Regarding the second claim — that Oxitec’s product “does not harm beneficial insects”
— there is, of course, no way to affirmatively know the long-term effects of this product on local fauna
because three years is a blip on the radar in the Public Health™ domain."
(My Opinion) : There was a reason for instituting Ellis Island as an immigration station to eliminate diseases, political dissidents, terrorists, and foreign diseases.
We are now experiencing a resurgence of diseases which had previously been eradicated in the US
a) Weakens America/AmericansJust in case you were wondering why allah da sudden there were reports of malaria in Texas and Florida...
b) Distances America's allies
c) Strengthens America's enemies
d) Attacks Christianity
e) Serves islam
f) Harms Israel
Or some combination of the above.

I want my DDT back, from the 50s!
We used to ride our bikes in the cloud behind the DDT truck and watch the skeeters drop dead out of the air.
So, in Florida, we now have: hurricanes, alligators, torrential downpours, crocodiles, sharks, #FloridaMan, termites, fire ants, and, just announced, MAN-MADE MUTANT SKEETERS!
We’d also ride behind the county fogger trucks; fun as hell!
And yet we’re still here...
County? Our neighborhood was fogged by Marines!
I hope that lawsuits are being filed, expedited, asking for an injunction (right word?) to stop this evil!
We are still here!
Well, you had to be “special” to get that treatment. We were just Middle Class folks.

It's nice they have them properly fenced in so they can control their "experiment" and stop it in case something goes terribly wrong.
