Artificial sugar replacement aspartame, found in thousands of 'diet' replacements - like Diet Coke, Extra chewing gum and even toothpaste, to be declared 'possibly carcinogenic to humans'

Is this the beginning of the end for low-calorie food and drink? Artificial sugar replacement aspartame, found in thousands of 'diet' replacements - like Diet Coke, Extra chewing gum and even toothpaste, to be declared 'possibly carcinogenic to humans' Leaked report says WHO cancer group could declare aspartame carcinogenic

An artificial sweetener added to thousands of fizzy drinks, chewing gums and low-calorie foods will be declared a potential cancer risk, a bombshell report claimed today.

Aspartame is set to be listed as 'possibly carcinogenic to humans' in a World Health Organization reclassification, according to insiders. It follows a major safety review into the artificial sugar replacement involving 1,300 studies.

Particular products containing aspartame — which entered the market in the 1980s — include Diet Coke, Dr Pepper and Fanta, as well as Extra chewing gum and Muller Light yoghurts. Some toothpastes, dessert mixes, and sugar-free cough drops also contain it.

The move will send shockwaves through the global food manufacturing market, with some of the world's best-loved brands affected. A huge push to crackdown on sugar over the past few decades has led to the mass usage of artificial sweeteners such as aspartame.

Experts immediately questioned the International Agency for Research on Cancer's (IARC) decision, calling the classification system used by the WHO's subsidiary body 'dumb' and arguing that 'the dose makes the poison'. Cancer Research UK explicitly states that artificial sweeteners such as aspartame don’t cause cancer.

Meanwhile, industry bodies claimed the IARC review consisted of 'widely discredited research' which 'contradicts decades of high-quality evidence'.

Similar WHO-backed cancer warnings slapped on red meat, working overnight and using mobile phones have faced criticism for sparking needless alarm over hard to avoid substances or situations.

Right, and I’ll quit using Equal when they pry that blue packet from my cold, dead hands.

Oookay... I guess we now know what is making you grumpy...

Good one! But in my defense, I’ve been grumpy way before Equal!

Well, duh. The FDA rushed approval for the stuff so fast it would make your head spin. (which it literally did, for some people). I’m sure it was all on the up and up./s

I recently rented a car in California that had a cancer warning sticker - on the driver’s left side window! And it was about 5”x5”, pretty big.

It really wasn’t in the way of seeing anything important, but it was an irritant/distraction. I peeled it off and stuck it on the rear 1/4 window. Probably non-complying with some Calicrat’s diktat, but I didn’t really care.

Aspartame was looked at as poison so long ago. I don’t know if it is or not, but I stayed away from it, because for me it ruined the taste of everything it was in, particularly diet soft drinks which I never could stand.

The blue one is not aspartame, the pink is. The stuff in Mio and diet rite cola is another artificial sweetener, I cannot eat that one. Stomach upset very quickly, then quick trips to the throne. I never have notice ill effects from aspartame though. SUCRALOSE...that is the nasty. I used electrolyte replacements with it as an ingredient one summer while painting my sisters house, I kept the steady trail to the toylot, and replaced the fluids with that stuff until I was dehydrated. It did not work as an electrolyte replacement. Drink pickle juice, water and iced tea while eating melons.

So if you mix diet coke with whiskey, the ethanol clears the methanol from your system? There is a reason painters consume a lot of booze, it actually negates paint thinners in the blood. Thinners break the skin barrier, and go straight to the blood. Good booze is a remedy.

The blue one is not aspartame, the pink is.

I politely beg to differ.

WEEKLY DIETITIAN TIP: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE IN COLORED SUGAR PACKETS?

Have you ever wondered which small, colored packet you should add to your coffee and what the difference is anyway?

> The white packets are table sugar, they pack in extra calories and added sugar.

The other colors are non-nutritive sweeteners, meaning they are calorie and sugar-free:

> The blue packets are aspartame, the most popular brand name being Equal. Aspartame is about 200X sweeter than sugar.

> The pink packets are saccharin, otherwise known as Sweet N Low. Saccharin is about 300X sweeter than sugar.

> The yellow packets are sucralose, also known as Splenda. Sucralose is 600-800X sweeter than sugar.

Their tastes vary in sweetness, so it’s a personal preference on which to pick. Each of these sweeteners is safe to consume as part of a healthy diet.

My mom was diabetic, so I’ve been drinking diet drinks since I was a kid. If aspartame is carcinogenic I would be ate up with it. These “studies” come to prearranged conclusions for someone’s benefit.

Everything gives you cancer, if you take enough of it for a long enough time.

Wasn’t aspartame flagged as carcinogenic something like 40 years ago?

When cyclamates were banned about that long ago the comments were that the sugar lobby- Big Sugar- had paid off politicians to make it so.

#30 I see pallets of soda in the sun all the time at grocery stores. The hot sun beating down on the cases. Gotta be higher the 86 degrees before too long.
Sizzle (your brain on Aspartame).
