SANTA CRUZ, CALIF. -- It all began in 1993, according to the official Woodies on the Wharf story. The local Santa Cruz woodie car club wanted to have a show, but they were meeting opposition from the merchants on the pier concerned that they'd lose business as a result of losing valuable parking spaces in front of the shops and restaurants. (Santa Cruz is one of the few piers you can actually drive a car on, but you know that.)
We all need friends, the group found one who helped the get the event launched. It's been a blast ever since, providing great business for the restaurants and shops on the pier, entertaining thousands of guests, and delighting car owners who get to show off their classic vehicles in one location.
If you've purchased a woodie in the past 10-15 years, you'd be pretty stoked right now. Owners are reporting that they're being offered $75k and more for a pristine wood, when just a few years back the cars were fetching half that amount. You don't have to own one to love the classic California icon--the woodie. This weekend you can roll back the clock and enjoy hundreds of woodies in one spot--on the 100-year-old Santa Cruz wharf! Set to the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean, sandy beaches, Cocoanut Grove and famed Boardwalk amusement, the woodies are surrounded by landmarks much older. Woodies date back to the 1930s, with the Woodies on the Wharf event showcasing pre-1952 vehicles.

Oh, it’s cars..........................
LOL
Yeah...thought it was some pride bs...
John Boehner was disappointed too...
Woodies?
Are they guys who think they are trees?
Or guys who have sex with trees?
Or just guys who marry their stepdaughters?

Long before my time, but I know about it.
I’m old enough to remember woodies but would never be arrogant enough to refer to Freepers who don’t know what they are as “ uneducated “ .
….
Sorry, but it was frustrating it all being about gays or something. What gives?
There was a surf band in the Bay Area in the 90s called The Woodies.

Agree.
In this instant information age, most freepers can’t read beyond titles. You were kind to use “uneducated.”
I probably shouldn’t have, but I was kind of surprised. A lot of Freepers are more into cars than I am.
A few years back I was jonesing for some Marini’s salt water taffy.
Pulled up to the pier and it was closed to traffic.
Odd.
Nothing was going to stop.
went up the street to the Dream Inn and asked what was going on.
I was informed about the Woodies. We told a few jokes.
Told the valet why drove over the mountain and offered $20 if he would let me run down to the pier and grab my stash of Marini Taffy.
$20 wasn’t enough, as I wasn’t a guest...wink, wink.
$50 did the trick but, I had to return in an hour.
No problemo.
Ended up at Stagnaro’s and got my fish and chips.
Walked around looking at these incredible vehicles.
Realizing I had been there 45 minutes I quickly went to Marini’s and returned to my car.
Valet said I could have stayed longer.
Naw, that was enough.
Gave him a handful of taffy and left.
A friend of mine from Spreckel’s will be showing his Woodie tomorrow...
LOL
I know some people who will have their cars there tomorrow.
Beautiful cars
Well, it is Santa Cruz so woodies on the wharf may have a different connotation. You never know about things Cali.
When I was growing up in the '50s, my mom's drive-around car was a '48 Willys Jeep with (as I recall) real wood panels. We kept it going till about 1961 when a front axle broke. We replaced it with another Willys (4 cylinder) that unfortunately had no wood panels. But it lasted pretty well too!
