Four people are dead and two more are critically injured after a fire broke out at an e-bike store in Lower Manhattan early Tuesday morning, New York Fire Department Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said.

"It is very clear that this was caused by lithium-ion batteries and e-bikes. There was a very large number of batteries and e-bikes," Kavanaugh said as she stood outside of HQ E-Bike Repair at a press conference Tuesday in Chinatown.

Two men and two women died in the fire, which broke out shortly after midnight Tuesday. Two other women are in critical condition, officials said.

The store was located on the first floor of the building, while residential apartments were on the floors above.

Kavanaugh said the department had previously written fire violations and conducted enforcement at the store.

"The volume of fire created by these lithium-ion batteries is incredibly deadly," she said.

The fire department also issued a safety warning Tuesday to not leave lithium-ion batteries charging. The safety video featured lithium-ion powered devices quickly catching fire and exploding.

My fire chief buddy is here Sunday. First time I’ve seen him since a Christmas party, and we didn’t get to chat much then. I’ll definitely be getting some real world scoop on how a big, serious FD is handling EV fires, and how it is affecting their operations.

Apparently, lithium fires are impervious to water and CO2.

When lithium batteries burn, a chemical reaction actually creates its own oxygen.

A year or two ago, some of Elon Musk's giant lithium storage batteries caught on fire in Australia.

The FD did not even try to put the fire out.

It burned itself out after several days.

Imagine a world where millions of those batteries will be located in under ground parking lots, below fully occupied apartment buildings.

You cannot park these vehicles in a parking garage where I live. They are not allowed to park there.

There needs to be a standard and enforcement of it,

I only use high-quality batteries such as Panasonic when I buy them for myself, and only ones with built-in protection.

“Protected Lithium-Ion (Li-ion) batteries have a small electronic circuit integrated into the cell packaging. This circuit protects the battery against common dangers, such as overcharge, over-discharge, short circuit/over current, and temperature. Protected 18650 batteries are safer to use in your devices.”

This battery issue has been going on for years, I hope this is not yet another unfixable situation that modern man can’t find a solution for.

The real issue seems to be bootleg cheapos or just plain in-the-open cheapos.

I understand that lithium ion battery fires are difficult to suppress, and further, that they occur more often than we’d like in e-bikes. My question is, “How come we don’t hear about them every day on laptop computers?”

I leave mine plugged in and charging 24/7, and I suspect most people, millions of them, do likewise.

When lithium batteries burn, a chemical reaction actually creates its own oxygen.

A better analogy would be jet engine vs. rocket. A jet carries its fuel, but needs the atmosphere to provide oxygen. A rocket has an inherently unstable fuel that only needs to be initialized to start a reaction. Li-ion batteries burn like rocket fuel, not jet fuel.

if they put a lithium battery in this baby it would create a hazardous no-go zone for decades

My guess is that laptop computers are designed and built to a higher standard than E-bikes.

There’s a ton of Chinese knock offs of higher end e-bikes. E-bike fires are very common in China.

Several NY buildings have already banned e-bikes and scooters. Some European ferries have banned EV autos from their ferry services.

I can just hear the democRATS commenting on the deaths: “a few people might be sacrificed for the greater good, for the grand future to come.”

And...last year Barack Hussein had 3 LARGE NG tanks installed in one of his compounds. While railing against NG for everyone else, he is making sure he gets his.
