World-renowned explorer Hamish Harding is among the five people who went missing aboard a tourist submarine visiting the shipwreck of the Titanic Monday morning, his family has confirmed.
Harding’s family said the 58-year-old British millionaire was aboard the missing OceanGate Expeditions submarine on Monday, a day after he shared his excitement about the trip on Instagram.
“We started steaming from St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada yesterday and are planning to start dive operations around 4am tomorrow morning. Until then we have a lot of preparations and briefings to do,” Harding wrote alongside picture of himself signing a banner celebrating the expedition.
His stepson, Brian Szasz, reposted Harding’s message on Facebook Monday, writing: “Thoughts and prayers for my stepfather Hamish Harding as his Submarine has gone missing exploring Titanic. Search and rescue mission is underway.”
The Boston Coast Guard said an active search was underway for the missing OceanGate Expeditions submarine, which offers tourists a chance to visit the wreck 370 miles off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, for $250,000.
The visit to the Titanic was poised to be only the latest in Harding’s impressive travel resume, with the explorer previously visiting space aboard the Blue Origin mission last year.

But as a fireman, you’d know that all that water would instantly quench any fire...
Oops! Hey... It happens every now and then.
How about a tiny hole or a bad seal in an observation port. Water comes in at 5000 psi pressure slicing thru anything in front of it. Then slowly the cabin fills with water, electricity is lost and they drown, ultimately assuming ambient pressure and temperature on the bottom.
With my moderate claustrophobia I’m perfectly safe. I wouldn’t go in that thing alone for five minutes, with the door closed, on dry land, let alone a couple miles down, locked in with four other people

I went inside a WWII submarine at the USS Alabama Battleship Park in Mobile, Alabama. It was terrifyingly claustrophobic inside.................
This type of operation being done in a commercial setting is bound to be far more dangerous. Corners are bound to be cut and there is no instant support team.
An acquaintance was scheduled to be a diver assisting them with the sub on the surface. He was sent home because of a medical issue, fortunately. He said there were issues with it that concerned him.
Whatever the outcome. there will be a motion picture about it.
And Hollywood will turn it into a love story....................

I grew up on Cape Cod in the 70’s. All summer long at camp there would be rumors that Ballard had found the wreck and then one day he did.
My own opinion is that they should cease these trips. It’s like gawking at a car wreck. The North Atlantic is a brutally beautiful place, but much caution is needed. I do not hold out much hope for these poor souls.
I once knew someone named Hamish.
Enough of these dives to the Titanic. The site should be declared an international grave site and further dives banned. There is nothing important to learn about her sinking and retrieving artifacts in my opinion is tantamount to grave robbing. Let those poor souls rest. Sadly a few more souls may be added to the Titanic dead.
Back in 1969, my parents took me to Disneyland. I had a Disneyland picture book, prior to the trip, so it was my goal to take the submarine ride. Well, that’s how I first learned of the word “claustrophobia”, cuz my poor dad made them stop that ride short so that he could get off! Now, as an adult, I can sympathize. No thanks!
