‘Window into history’: Tapes detail Lyndon B. Johnson’s stolen election

A former Texas voting official was on the record detailing how nearly three decades earlier, votes were falsified to give then-congressman Lyndon B. Johnson a win .

...

After Mangan‘s death in 2015 at the age of 87, his family found the labeled cassette tapes ...

Luis Salas, the former South Texas election judge, told Mangan for the story: “Johnson did not win that election; It was stolen for him. And I know exactly how it was done.”

. ..

pulled back the curtain on the razor-thin victory that had drawn suspicions ever since election officials in rural Jim Wells County announced the discovery of uncounted votes in a ballot box known as Box 13 in the days after the 1948 Democrat primary Senate runoff.

...

Mangan‘s son, Peter, said listening the tapes was like getting “a little window into history.”

...

Salas .. said one of the reasons he finally decided to talk was because he had been quite ill.

Mangan .. Salas to go on the record, he told him: “If you die, history will never know what happened.”

Lawrence said much is now known about Box 13, thanks to both Mangan‘s 1977 story and research done later by LBJ biographer Robert Caro, who “essentially reaffirmed” Mangan‘s story and built on it.

...

Salas told Mangan that the powerful South Texas political boss George B. Parr - who wielded control with favors and coercion - ordered that some 200 votes be added to Box 13. Salas said he then watched as the fraudulent votes were added in alphabetical order, with the names coming from people who hadn’t voted in the election.

The new votes gave Johnson the primary victory over then-Gov. Coke Stevenson by an 87-vote margin. Johnson - subsequently bestowed with the nickname “Landslide Lyndon”

"Human nature is the same."

Nope, the Republican's I knew at the our local Republican Executive Committee were the salt of the Earth, and would not think of stealing an election.

I think they’ll never allow Trump to win again. It was a fluke the first time. They hounded him nonstop throughout his presidency and denied him the win he earned in 2020. I watched them do the same to our MAGA candidates here in AZ in 2022 and they’ll do it again with no shame at all.

Frankly, I doubt if another Republican will win a national office ever again since the GOP lacks the will to fix the continuing problems with our voting system.

I’ll continue to support Trump and the MAGA movement until my dying breath but, barring a miracle like 2016, I’m not hopeful about our chances. That’s what the last few election cycles have done to my belief in election integrity, and I blame both parties for that.

People talk about Clinton and Kennedy’s sexual liaisons

Clinton even had sexual liaisons with Kennedy?

I expected that from Slick Willie, but I thought JFK had taste.

Judge Parr stuffed the ballot boxes in Starr, Zapata and Duval Counties and when that wasn’t enough this happened. It was part of my family’s lore when I was growing up.

My Grandfather was in Peck’s Cafe in Freer Texas the morning after the election. They counted 33 people in the Cafe that had voted against LBJ. There were only 28 votes turned in for LBJ’s opponent.
