The beloved star of Discovery Channel's Flying Wild Alaska Jim Tweto, 68, has been killed along with a hunting and fishing guide from Idaho when their small plane crashed shortly after takeoff.
Tweto's family-run rural aviation business in Unalakleet was featured in three seasons of the television series a decade ago.
He and passenger Shane Reynolds of Orofino, Idaho, died Friday near the coastal village of Shaktoolik, roughly 125 miles east of Nome, Alaska State Troopers said.
The plane 'was witnessed taking off but not climbing and then crashing,' their report said.
Troopers were notified of an SOS activation around 11:48 a.m. Friday, followed by a report that a Cessna 180 had crashed 35 miles northeast of Shaktoolik.
Authorities responding from Nome recovered both bodies. The National Transportation Safety Board said it is investigating.
The Anchorage Daily News reported that Tweto was a co-owner of Hageland Aviation Services and then Era Alaska, which would later become Ravn Air Group.
Reynolds operated Northwest Fishing Expeditions, guiding clients in Alaska and across the Pacific Northwest for years.

I watched the Tweto’s in an older TV series. It may have been on Discovery. Back then, Ariel was working on getting her pilot’s license. She seemed like an accident waiting to happen back then. I checked Jim Tweto’s Imdb page but the only show that came up was Flying Wild Alaska.
It was still airborne when it was ABOVE the state. The plane crashed INTO the state.

I’m not at all sure that Carl Eielson was not mentioned in Glacier Pilot. I sort of remember the name, but it’s been decades since I read the book.
How did it crash above the state? I thought they crashed when they came in contact with the state.

I wanted to read Glacier Pilot again, so I ordered a used copy on Amazon, from Thriftbooks in Dallas. I just received a hardback in great condition, and it has a lengthy inscription (with a little cartoon of a biplane over mountains) written and signed by Bob Reeve himself. Pretty cool, eh? Too bad I can’t read the whole inscription; that guy’s handwriting was terrible.
