The beloved star of Discovery Channel's Flying Wild Alaska Jim Tweto, 68, has been killed along with a hunting and fishing guide from Idaho when their small plane crashed shortly after takeoff.
Tweto's family-run rural aviation business in Unalakleet was featured in three seasons of the television series a decade ago.
He and passenger Shane Reynolds of Orofino, Idaho, died Friday near the coastal village of Shaktoolik, roughly 125 miles east of Nome, Alaska State Troopers said.
The plane 'was witnessed taking off but not climbing and then crashing,' their report said.
Troopers were notified of an SOS activation around 11:48 a.m. Friday, followed by a report that a Cessna 180 had crashed 35 miles northeast of Shaktoolik.
Authorities responding from Nome recovered both bodies. The National Transportation Safety Board said it is investigating.
The Anchorage Daily News reported that Tweto was a co-owner of Hageland Aviation Services and then Era Alaska, which would later become Ravn Air Group.
Reynolds operated Northwest Fishing Expeditions, guiding clients in Alaska and across the Pacific Northwest for years.

“The plane was seen taking off but not climbing”
I am no fan of the vaccine but it sounds like the plane never climbed out after take-off if the article is correct?
Sad. My wife and I enjoyed that show even if it was “made for TV” because the personalities and operation was interesting and the scenery was pure Alaska.
I knew a guy some years ago who was a bush pilot in Alaska in the 1930’s.
Must have been pretty hairy flying around up there in those planes way back when.
Never saw this show, though. Don’t watch television...
My bad….I’m not a fan either, but the rush to vaxx-attribute EVERY death has become silly.
It’s my mild form of protest. /sarc
Sad news - I loved that show.
I am trying to figure out the title “above state aged 68”. What do they mean by that, was he too old to fly?
You’d enjoy the book Glacier Pilot, by Beth Day. It’s mostly about Bob Reeve, but there’s plenty about other early-day bush pilots too.
The title was cryptic to me as well.
As long as he could pass the medical, he’s good to fly.
Poor writing. Dude was 68 and simply crashed his plane. “above Alaska state” is an awkward phrase telling you where the incident took place.
Thank you for that suggestion, I put that on my list of books to read!

I had that book and loaned it out. Never got it back. Great read.
180 is a popular taildragger brush plane in Alaska.
Mechanical issues or overloaded aircraft. Surprised he couldn’t put it down if it wouldn’t climb. Possibly no place to land due to trees.
I’m less inclined to blame the vax than whoever he may have PO’D.
Accidents happen, you know, especially to someone in the know who does not toe the party agenda.
I read my brother’s copy many years ago. I might buy another copy soon.
I hate lending books because I lose too many that way.
Bush Piloting is not very forgiving. I suppose there are more dangerous occupations. Firefighting. Soldiering. Getting between a microphone and Romney.
I was confused too
Maybe it just meant he was flying above Alaska ? Not that he was too old.
So called journalists are slopp6.
Sloppy
Agree with your theory. Tons of 180’s around, excellent airplane.
