The Bexar County Commissioners have approved a program to acquire 3,800 small gun safes/lock boxes and 1,000 cable locks for guns to give away to county residents this summer. Bexar County is in Texas and includes San Antonio. The money for the program is part of ‘The American Rescue Plan Act‘ of 2021. The Act authorized a minimum of 1.9 Trillion dollars of spending, focused primarily on leftist programs.
The Bexar County Commissioners Court approved the distribution of 3,800 portable handgun safes and 1,000 handgun cable locks free of charge to county residents throughout the summer.

According to the release, the initiative received approximately $145,000 in funding through the American Rescue Plan Act.
The program involves cooperation between Bexar County and University Health, a local healthcare provider in San Antonio and Bexar County. They are officially known as the Bexar County Hospital District and are a separate governmental entity and political subdivision of the State of Texas. People are supposed to pre-register to obtain a small gun safe/lockbox and/or a cable lock. One gun safe/lockbox and one cable lock will be allowed per household. From the University Health site:
GunSafety4Bexar, a program by University Health and Bexar County, is distributing gunlocks and gun cases to families with firearms. The goal is to reduce firearm injuries by urging owners to store their guns unloaded, locked and separate from ammunition.
One gunlock (as supplies last) and one gun case per household. Pre-registration is required.
At the registration site, this information was available:
Visit the Bexar County Parks & Recreation website for more information on the parks below. You may sign up for any precinct event and do not have to live in that precinct.

Criminals love gun locks.
When something is “free,” YOU are the product.
“Registration Has Now Closed”
I’m gonna take a wild guess & say that whoever registered must list the type of firearm they possess?
“Let us deliver this to your address, so we know where to come get them and the size of the package we’ll be moving.”
No thanks.
That’s one way to start building a database of who owns a handgun, I suppose.
yep! nothing good ever comes from a democrat program.
Same democrat scum who kept Chick Fil A out of SA airport.
Most of those safes will wind up being sold on eBay.
I’m OK with this if the safes are limited to families with small children. Otherwise, don’t be stupid.
A better alternative is to teach your kids “don’t touch”, like with fire and noisy snakes.
Out here in CaCaLand safes are mandatory if you have children or child visitors. Another “tax” on owning a means to protect your lives.
Sounds like a trap (back door way of creating gun ownership lists), unless they’re not recording who shows up (and that includes license plate cameras).
I have a drawer full of gun locks I could donate. I get on with every gun I buy, and have never even considered using one. I did use one to lock a fence gate once, but it rusted in no time.
Gun-proofing your children is a better option than kid-proofing your guns.
(Has there ever been a parent in the history of Christmas whose kids didn't manage to find where their gifts were stashed?)
Also (before anybody goes there), if you didn't bother to read the entire ruling, the Heller Decision ruled (among other things) that laws mandating trigger locks or gun safes are UNCONSTITUTIONAL.
Held:... 3. The handgun ban and the trigger-lock requirement (as applied to self-defense) violate the Second Amendment...
...Similarly, the requirement that any lawful firearm in the home be disassembled or bound by a trigger lock makes it impossible for citizens to use arms for the core lawful purpose of self-defense and is hence unconstitutional....
Rick Ector is always looking for them for his program to teach women the defensive uses of firearms in Detroit.

I’ll look into it. Thanks.
