Researchers have long known that moderate exercise has a beneficial impact on the body's response to inflammation, but what's been less understood is why. New research done on a mouse model suggests that the answers may lie at the production level of macrophages—white blood cells responsible for killing off infections, healing injury and otherwise acting as first responders in the body.
"Much like if you train your muscles through exercise, we showed that exercise of moderate intensity ended up training the precursors of those macrophages in the bone marrow," says Ali Abdul-Sater. "The way that exercise is doing this is by changing the way those cells breathe, essentially, how they use oxygen to generate energy and then changing the way they access their DNA."
While many studies look at temporary boosts to the immune system immediately after exercise, this study found these changes occurred even a week later, suggesting that the changes were long-term.
"Inflammation is amazing, it's a very important part of our normal immune response," says Abdul-Sater. "What we're concerned about is excessive inflammation. Heart disease, diabetes, many cancers and autoimmune diseases, all essentially begin because there was an inappropriate inflammatory response."
He says it is around the six-to-eight-week mark into the exercise regimen where changes really became apparent, compared with sedentary mice. "There's a lot of rewiring that's taking place in the circuitry of how the cells breathe, how the cells metabolize glucose, how the cells then access DNA. So all that just takes time."
"People that got seriously ill from COVID-19, went into what is called a cytokine storm essentially, they released this massive number of cytokines, those mediators that are produced by inflammatory cells, which then cause that accumulation of fluid in lungs."

It’s been my personal experience that high levels of blood sugar can have a very VERY large effect on inflammation. Get the sugar level down in the 50-75 range (number on common home testers), and systemic inflammation drops significantly.
Can you ping me or add to the list....Spokeshave who works out 2 times a week...never gets sick...just turned 81.
Interesting. Thanks for sharing.
I try to get a walk in everyday when possible.
Please add me to your ping list.
Thanks!
If you had worked out 3 times a week you would probably be 91 today.
Lol
Have been doing more...round and round the rooms...like every time I get up from my computer....half a mile a day works for me. Will try and up it.
Get outside when you can. Fresh air and a little exercise are mentally invigorating too. Doesn’t take much time to walk a mile; well under 30 minutes.
I don’t see how many days per week they exercised.
Use it or lose it.
My shoulders started locking up with stiffness and pain. Started to lift light weights, and the problem went away.
Get an active dog who needs walks every day.
Anyone have the magic cure for sciatica? I walk, indoor cycle, do yoga/stretch, and work out with dumbells at least 3x per week. I also go to a chiropractor. No pharmaceuticals.
Otherwise, back disc replacement is an option that is better than fusion, at least.
Finally, there was a study showing Urolithin A could help grow back discs in mice, at a rate I recall being around 2,500 mg a day, but it hasn't been done in humans at that amount.
Research PEMF for sciatica...
Thank you.
Thank you.
Saving for later
