70’s by a wide margin.
The early 60s, before the Beatles was the height of prepackaged corporate music.
“They even had a candy bar named in their honour!”
Funnily enough, they actually recorded some of their early tracks under the name “The Almann Joys”.
64-74, that’s a decade right?
I say “Roll ‘Em Pete” by Big Joe Turner and Pete Johnson, but then that takes us back to the ‘30s.
.
I think it depends on what genre you like.
Bands like Metallica have insane talent but it may not be your cup of tea.
I’ll switch from them to classical music to Duran Duran, then throw in some R.E.M., Geroge Michael, Queensryche, and Dire Straits. ...but also loved some of the 70’s rock.
or some could argue 65-75 :)
I think the 60's set the table for an expansion of styles and sounds; the 70's delivered on that exploration; and the 80's sort of left it all behind and a lot of unique sounds disappeared..
+1
Well said.
IMHO:
70’s
60’s
80’s
YMMV
I would vote for the 60s and 70s both. My iPhone is fully loaded with both.
No question.
The 60’s have MOTOWN!!!! Almost no need for anything else!!
Yes, ok, but it wasn't prepackaged corporate music pretending to be rebellious and edgy, was it?
Are you saying Buddy Holly and the music produced by Phil Spector was prepackaged corporate music? I'm not sure about that, but admit I could be wrong.
I assume what you mean is Andy Williams, Nat King Cole, Doris Day, etc.
It was plastic, but didn't pretend to be otherwise. For the people who had survived the depression and WWII, plastic was fine. Plastic was modern, reassuring, comfortable. Safe.
And Stax!
Pretty sure that 70-80 yr. old Millemnials will NOT be listening to that RAP CRAP!
Nothing can come close to the 60’s. It just any better than the Motown sound. The Temps, Smoky, Wilson Picket, Otis Redding, Brook Benton, The Supremes, James Brown and so many more. Too many to mention.
It wasn't until years later that I realized that the three "women" at the end that strutted onto the stage was actually David Bowie in drag.
He puts all the pretend women of today to shame!
Mid 70s is when it started to slow down, and the video era started, remember, before MTV there were shows like “Don Kirschner’s Rock Concert” and “The Midnight Special”, so now bands were more on TV and the image started to matter more.
Doris Day, who’s son Terry Melcher produced the The Beach Boys, and who narrowly escaped death at the hands of Charles Manson. Sharon Tate and her friends were murdered because she had the poor fortune to be renting the house that Melcher lived in when he turned Manson down for a recording contract.
