Detective Lieutenant Mark McPherson (Dana Andrews) investigates the killing of Laura Hunt (Gene Tierney),
found dead on her apartment floor before the
movie starts. McPherson builds a mental picture
of the dead girl from the suspects he interviews.
He is helped by the striking painting of the late
lamented Laura hanging on her apartment wall.
But who would have wanted to kill a girl with whom
every man she met seemed to fall in love?
To make matters worse, McPherson finds
himself falling under her spell too.
Then one night, halfway through his investigations,
something seriously bizarre happens to make
him re-think the whole case.

The theme song became a jazz standard. Never cared for it, but I’ve played it.

My parents knew her somehow before I was born. I only remember vaguely my mother saying that at one point my parents hid money and jewelry in can of Crisco for her in their house. I don’t know the circumstances.

Gene Tierney definitely had it going on.

... and she was a lifelong Republican who was pals with Ronald Reagan.

He should have married her instead of the New Age Witch, Nancy.

Ron and Nancy truly loved each other.

And that’d be two of them... as here’s weird little factoid... George W. Bush’s girlfriend before Laura was Christina “Tina” Cassini, daughter of Gene Tierney. What if Shrub Jr had married Christina instead of pro-abortion shrew Laura Welch?

Sadly, Tina passed away of cancer in 2015.

Here’s another factoid. Her daughter was born deaf and mentally disabled because a fan who either had or was recovering from rubella “just had to meet her” at a Hollywood war bond fundraising event while Tierney was pregnant. I don’t remember where I read it but I remember the fan gushed over her and admitted as much, and Tierney was momentarily stunned.

‘He should have married her instead of the New Age Witch, Nancy.’

no; Gene Tierney sadly suffered from severe depression, which led to barbaric shock treatments, which she later described as ‘pieces of my life that just disappeared...’

her life was much harder than anyone knew; that she got throuh it a well as she did is a major tribute to her inner strength...

But wasn’t Nancy the one who made Reagan become a Republican in the first place?

She was one of the actresses of the Golden Age of Hollywood who were beautiful (at times breathtakingly so) and incredibly talented. The world will never see their likes again.

The IMDB website’s User Reviews section is very good, especially for old movies and tv shows.

Right before she died Mrs. Lee filed a complaint and my Hub investigated it.....she had that portrait hanging in her residence. He said it was beautiful. I wonder where it went after her death? Laura is one of my all-time favorite movies. I could watch it all day....RIP
